ford 4.0 trans failure? AA wants comments

I'm at 95K miles and have gone through 1 A4LD and believe my 2nd maybe on it's way out. I'm gonna have it looked over and rebuilt before I start flat towing around my Toyota p/u.
AOD sounds great I just hope AA makes the t-case adapter as well. How about shifting issues? Won't the ECU need to be reprgramed for any swapped in trans?
screw Borg Warner electronically controlled or any electronically shifted or chain driven t-cases tcase for that matter. All I know is that through mild wheeling with stock tires and conservative driving, I managed to chip teeth off my t-case gears and stretched the chain How about a Dana300 adapter? AOD to Atlas II?
To be perfectly honest, I'm not sure which t-cases even have the front output on the driver's side......

Wanted 4.0L Block and crank can even be blown....

Advance Adapters need a 4.0L block and crank or a whole motor
whatever you may have. You will be able to get the parts back
when they are through.

They need these parts in order to build transmission
bellhousing adapters for their upcoming tranny swap kit.

You would need to drop the parts off at their location in Paso
Robles, CA.

I really hope someone has this stuff so we can get this project
underway

If you have the parts contact Vic at 1-800-350-2223 ext. 530
Please contact me as well so I know that they have what they
need.

Thanks!!

Wow they are responding to us!

Heck if nobody has this stuff laying around we need to do a group buy on it and send it to them.

I have one sitting here in my garage and nothing is going to be done with it at least until January of 2003. I wish I had a way to get it there. What are they looking to adapt to it Rick?

That's what they are going to be looking into Kevin. He mentioned a NV3550 for a manual tranny.

What about us slush box lovers. This whole thing started as a replacement for the A4LD. I would love to see a NV3550, but also a auto tranny option as well.

Would they be making an adaptor for the POS 4R55E Also????

He was also talking about auto trannys, but we didn't discuss a specific model as a replacement. Vic does realize there are more autos out there than manuals and that the current tranny is a POS.

One thing to think about is in 97 they went from a 6 bolt crank to an 8 bolt crank. That may or may not cause problems for the newer explorer swaps.

Keep us posted! I have about 120k on my auto 94 XLT and sure hope there is something better out there to replace it with when it goes! Planning a big trip for the end of the summer hopefully it won't go out untill after but............?

It will work. But we may need to switch our computers to the ones for the manual tranny.

Hey Rick, ask them if there is any way I can ship this one to them.

700R4 or AOD which ever one is the easiest to fit from what Vic mentioned on the phone today. Shouldn't be much of problem for the earlies since the computers don't look for feedback from the tranny. Not sure how that will work out for the later models which do.

Right now it's a matter of getting an engine to them so they can see how much effort it's going to take to make something else work, they may decide that it's too expensive and can it. If they do come up with something it's not going to be cheap but neither is rebuilding an A4LD. Hopefully when the time comes those who have shown an interest here will be willing to come up with the cash so something can get put into production.

I've offered the use of the parts I have laying around here so it's a matter of finding the time to drive them up there.

Tim

I don't think a stock 700r4 tranny is that good. My girlfriends dad has been a chevy truck man his whole life and he has replaced the stock 700r4 tranny in 4 or 5 of his trucks. His last Sierra he had for 7 years and replaced the tranny 3 times, and he only drive15-20k a year. Besides its a Chevrolet piece anyway.

yes but a 700R4 is inexpensiv and easyiley modified to last you can even buy a completly rebuilt one from JET and it would outlast the little 4.0 2 to 1 same with a AOD just talk to the muscle car crowd, i would welcome just about anything AA has to offer even if i have to swap to a stick.

I am now wanting to Buy adaptors for Both Auto and Manual Tranny 4.0 v-6 Now that I have a good Runnig 4.0 in my 92 Explorer The Goal is to convert it to 4x4 first with a solid axle. And I would love to have an NV3550 manual tranny for my Navajo.

I would be totally happy bolting an AOD to my engine but the idea of putting in a weak chevy trans doesn't seem fun. To build the 700r4 cost $$$. From what I've seen in Mustangs on stock AOD's they are pretty tough. To put in the 700r4( which hardly has any of our tranny's beat) you'd need an adapter, the trans, and then you would have to build it. I'd rather stick with an AOD with just a shift kit, adapter, and a tranny cooler. Besides I'll never put any GM parts on my FORD. I hate Chevy and their substandard Trucks and SUV's.

I've got the t5 in my explorer with 120k on it... I'll end up driving it until its dead, and that can't be too far off...
First gear synchros are toast and second is almost gone, pretty much have to stop to get it into first. I've been stalling as long as I can, but I know it won't last too long. Build the kit and I will buy one next January when I'm in California.

For you guys wanting a strong AOD trans, a company called Lentech sells them beefed up. They have there trannies running 9's in mustangs. Good Luck.

I think the 700r4 would be the best choice because of its low first gear.. From what I've seen it doesn't really matter if its a 700, a4ld or aod.. Its probably going to need rebuilt.. But which can be rebuilt the strongest to last the longest? I also don't know the exact 1st gear ratios for all of the trannys but I think the 700 is the lowest with possibly the highest od ratio? I am also wondering.. can a dana 20 from a 76 eb be bolted up to the a4ld?
