I am parcial to putting Ford parts on my truck. So I am all for the AOD. I have seen many after market companies make diffrent parts that lower the first gear ratio, added clutch packs ect...

I also think Hotweels had a great idea to tell the guys at Rangerstation. I am sure they area having the same problem we are. If someone is a user there put the bug in there ear, and maybe the more people that are intersted in this the fast it might get done.

Eric

I am with the group for the AOD.

Reasoning? The AOD is not as tight a fit as a 700r4 would be, the AOD already has adapters made by AA to fit to the transfer case in our Exploders, and there are so many different upgrades available for it that you can pick almost all the ratios you want and the strength levels as well.

Besides why put in a GM product that has had problems as plaguing in it's past as the A4LD?

I got a 93 STX w/ 4.0, and the craptaluclar Mazda trans. Blew it up once already to the tune of 2k, and feels like it i on it's way out again already after less than 10,000 miles.

I would like to see AOD or the NV 3500 swap. I HATE 700R4's with a passion, have blown plenty of those up also.

Actually, I'm more partial for the AOD swap as long as it doesn't permantly alter the trans so I can't bolt a small block back up to it, as I see 351W dreams in my future.

Matt

BTW, over here from RRORC

Well, I shipped off my 91-94 crank with the 6 bolt pattern today to AA. Now they should have all they need to accomidate all of us Explorer enthusiasts.

Sounds great Kevin! See ya this weekend! We'll be pulling into Ryans tomorrow afternoon. We are ahead of schedule and in Eugene Oregon right now.

I would be interested in whatever heavier auto w/OD tranny would fit. Darn A4LD craptastic trannies.

Oh yeah, I am over here from RRORC too.

hi guys, Thank you for all your comments. I want to give an extra thanks to Rick, Driven Auto parts, diff whack daddy, and all the other individuals who offered so much! We were looking at the block today and just based on the bolt pattern, we have many concerns. This is where I need to stop and discuss an important issue with you all. This is getting commercial. I used this forum before for opinions only. Do you as forum members want to experience the developement of a new product? Do you want a say? if you all agree, i could use some help

Vic, I have to say that is great idea. Since I am now wanting to buy both a Manual Tranny and Auto Tranny adaptors. I would be happy to help in any way I can.

well it is obvious the AOD/AODE is the choice based on your opinions. We have decided to start R&D on an adapter to mate the 4.0 block to the AOD. I want to speed up our R&D, I could use some more help to speed this along. Here is a concern, The AOD was only used with the larger 164 tooth flexplate. This means the bellhousing portion of the trans is quite larger than the a4ld. My question is: What is the clearance like in your tunnel area now with the a4ld? If minimal, we could have a body lift issue here.

There seems to be plenty of tunnel clearance on the 1st generation ex's that I looked at. I wasn't able to get any good pics due to lighting and it's a bit difficult to get my camera up in there with all the other junk in the way.

I haven't heard of any problems from the V8 crowd with putting the AOD in there on the first generation ex, but I may have missed it.

The second gen explorers appear to have a problem.....My 95 has about 2 inches of clearance between the exhuast and the bellhousing. :(

I can take Photos the measurements. The photo below is of my 92 5-speed with no Body lift. My 92 Auto has a Body lift. I will be taking the tranny out of the auto one in a few weeks to convert the Explorer to 4x4. I hope this helps. I can take photos of any thing I can.

AOD excellent

The AOD is the same a s the 4r70w correct?, they came in the second gen x's with a longer v-8 so I cant see much of a problem there. Question is did the firewall on the second generation change that much- maybe to accomodate the v-8? Pics from both may help sort it out.

So will a 4r70w from an Explorer bolt to the existing transfer case?

How long does it take to develop an adapter?-3-6-9 months? This is exciting! Yea yea my life is a bit boring at the moment, but this IS exciting for Explorer owners.

I've jsut seen this post and would like to say that the A4LD is a huge peice of junk like everyone else says. I went threw 9!!! Before I finally went to the C4 tranny. There's no adapter plate needed to install the C4, is quite simple to tell you the truth, heck the flywheel is still available from Ford! The bellhousing needed is that from a 74-78 Mustang 2 with the 2.8 engine and a C4 tranny. You must use the flywheel for the same, there again available from Ford for around $70, then thats about it. You'll need to move your crossmeember foward 5 inchs and redrill the frame and have a driveshaft made for the new lengh, cost me around $175. The only major thing about this is it is only a 3-speed but I only drag race my truck so?? Its actually not as bad as I thought. I have 4:10 gears and 26 inch tal tires and I'm at 2800 rpms at around 65-70 mph in 3rd. Oh yeah don't forget the shifter. I wrote an installation guide for the C4 if anyone's interested, its more complete then this is but its also for a 2wd. I know nothing of hte 4wd transfer case so please don't ask what will bolt to what.
AS for the AOD, sign me up too!! I have a couple of these trannys lying around my house and would love to build one up to regain my overdrive and be able to go on long drives. Later Doug904.

I'm first reading this too. I was pretty happy with our trannys (having owned 3 auto explorers with no major troble) till i blew my tranny just climbing mt washington. Especially embarrasing as the metro behind me passed me by the side of Rt 302 ten minutes after departing the rock.

I'd apreciate ANYTHING that could be done to replace this tranny. It had only 54,000 miles and i was CAREFUL to it. damn shame and now i'm 3K poorer. Anything you can do to change trannys would be a blessing!

Any new news? (we are all waiting anxiously :D)

Just a quick question for people here. You do realize that the AOD/AODE does not have manual control of all 4 gears, correct????

It only has 1, D, OD.

Also, if you are going to use an AOD, you will want to upgrade it to a 1-piece main shaft instead of the existing 2-piece unit....... this is the weak point.

As for the AODE (a better unit than the AOD due to more use of torrington bearings over thrust washers), you would need to have a stand alone computer programmed to run it...... or have your computers custom programmed. Otherwise you are going to get a check engine light constantly.

Building a bulletproof A4LD is one of my next projects (when I have the time). It can be done, as they are used in off-road race trucks all the time. This is much harder on them....... and they are running behind upwards of 400hp doing this. Of course, there are alot of internal upgrades (such as welded planetary cages and so on).

One of the biggest problems with rebuilds is that there are some parts that you just can't cheap out on in these trannies. You replace the pump with a NEW Ford pump, not a rebuilt unit. The rebuilt unit will fail prematurely. You ALWAYS replace the forward one-way clutch..... no matter how good it looks, or it will fail soon afterward. You do not go with a factory converter, you buy an upgraded unit with the better lock-up clutch and brazed fins. There are some other things also, but these are the biggies.

Anyway, this will be interesting to watch. Haven't really gotten into rebuilding trannies yet, but there is a market.... and we are tired of getting crap trannies from rebuild shops (for our auto repair business).

Good luck to all. :)
