91 XLT
Hello everyone! I'm obviously new to the forum, tho Im not new to Ford ownership. Always wanted an Explorer, and have had this one now for 3 years. Its always been reliable, until now. HELP!

What I have is a 91 XLT. It usually runs great, but a few days ago, it suddenly died in the middle of traffic. No warning at all. No warning lights came on, it didnt sputter or make any odd noises. Nothing. Im driving along fine one minute, and Im dead in my lane the next. I had to push it to the side of the street. It seemed that I had no spark. After about 20 minutes of just letting it sit there, it started normally and I drove home, about 2 miles. The next day, it drove fine for about 4 miles, then died again. It started up again right away, so I headed home. It ran for about 2 miles, and died. Started again, ran about 1 mile, then died. Wouldnt start, so I let it sit. After a little while, it started fine, ran another mile, died. By now, Im just around the corner from home, but it wont start. I let it sit awhile again, started it normally, drove home.

I've had it running in the yard, and it doesnt die. If I drive it anywhere, it dies. I'll admit that Im not a mechanic, altho I can fix anything if I can figure out what the problem is.

Can anyone help me figure out the problem? Has anyone else had this problem? HELP!!!

^yup, sam is such a big help! anyways, i wonder if you might have a fuel pump problem. can you hear it whining at all when it dies?

nope. I have tried to find any noise or other warning indicator of what the problem is, but this one has me stumped! I've even called a few people I know, and so far no one has been able to say for sure.

You know, a mechanic friend of mine told me months ago that he thought that he heard my fuel pump make some sort of noise, but he listened further and didnt hear anything, so we dismissed it as his faulty hearing, lol.

Guess tomorrow I'll go out and check the fuel pump. Thanks!

Welcome to this forum! You said that you have no spark, but you might also have no fuel too? Do you see a check engine light turn on when you stall? The PCM relay cuts out the power to the PCM, and the fuel pump if it's not working properly. Check this relay as well as the ground connection. Another two things to check would be the camshaft/crankshaft position sensors. Turn the key to the on position, then turn the engine with a breaker bar or a ratchet. You should hear the fuel pump prime every time you turn the pulley on the engine.
