Found ripped hose...What's it's purpose???

I have a 2001 XLT. I recently found this ripped/corroded hose that is supposed to feed some type of fluid to my rear axle on the driver's side. The only problem is that I don't know what it does or how I can fix it. Can anyone clue me in. Feedback is greatly appreciated.

it is a vent line for the axle. If you dont fix it, you could get dirt/water in there over time.

I have those hoses on my vehicles too. It's an overflow of some sort. They don't lead anywhere on mine either.

x2 -- its a vent.

And looking at the picture you posted, it seems like it needs to be checked and replaced as there's traces of oil around where the hose connects to the axle.

yup - defilenlty has a purpose, or it wouldn't be there. That's .02 cents Ford could of saved per vehicle

That hose should go up to a clip on the bottom side of your body- its a vent hose for your rear differential. You can get some rubber hose just about anywhere and replace it. I would recommend it be done sooner than later. Should you find yourself driving through deep water, it could fill your diff up, not a good thing.

the breather is so the fluid inside the diff can expand and air can escape, or re-enter as its cooled, every case that holds fluid in your turck is vented to atmosphere.

Just replace the length of hose and re-use the factory air inlet / dirt blocker, if you plan to run through deep water (like launching a boat or 4x4) then you can extend the rear axle breather up even further in the body, and the front diff, transmission, and transfer case.

any 3/8" rubber hose will work, fuel, cooling, transmission any auto parts store will have it.

Where's your spare? hahaha

That's exactly how I found out about the hose. I was getting ready to crank my spare back up under my XLT (I had just repaired my flat tire) and I seen that hose just dangling. "Uh-oh, that can't be good!"

Found this hose hanging on my truck today. There's a body clip on the end, but nothing else. Is there supposed to be something? What's this dirt blocker thing?

just cut the old hose off and reattach it use a small hose clamp....on of my hoses goes from the axle to my gas door and the other comes up above my radiator....

the clip you are talking about is what holds the hose up high...be sure to leave some slack in your hose so when you are off road and the axle articulates, it won't rip off again...you should probably also check the fluids in your axle since you don't know how long its been like that and water might have already gotten in...

OK, here's what I mean... The hose is still attached to the axle. That's not a problem. It's the other end that fell off from somewhere and I don't know where to put it. It had some sort of body clip on it, which I assume was holding it onto the frame somewhere. What I'm looking to find out is if that end is just left open, or has a filter on it, or attaches someplace. For now, I just have the open end stuck in a frame rail hole so it doesn't drag on the ground. Thanks!

OK. You replied while I was typing... I'll just find a good place to hang it up high and leave it. When I saw something about a dirt blocker mentioned, I figured that there must be more to it.

Wow, I'm glad I found this. I just picked up a 99 Sport Friday afternoon, found said hose this morning and ripped it off the clip. Now I feel like a moron.

thats what it's here for...you might want to also check the front to see if that hose is intact, and for sure, have the fluids checked...
