Ok guys, I am a newbe to the Explorer world. I have been working with old and Fox body Mustangs for years and spending time on the Mustang boards to learn. I performed several searches to find the information I needed, but cannot seem to find it. Apologies if it is obvious to others.

I am in the process of creating one of those Frankenstein trucks currently. I have just purchased a '98 Explorer 2WD 5.0 AOD that I am planning to swap bodies with my '57 F100 pickup. I have a 331 motor in the garage that was planned for another project that I now plan to put into this during the swap. I have done several modifications to my '66 Mustang that has had a 93 Mustang 5.0 Mass Air swap. The computer picked up all those changes including cam, intake, headers, etc. Does the '98 Explorer 5.0 computer work the same way? I am aware of the external EGR and some of the other changes that are on the Explorer, but I don't want to have to burn a chip like the new mod motors from Ford require after every change.

Also, I want to confirm the issues with headers on the Explorer. I have huge metal fenders on the F100 and am planning to route the headers outside the Explorer frame to avoid the issues I can see. I still have to figure out how to handle the crossover and mufflers with the gas tank in the way. Are there other issues to be concerned about?

Thanks!!!

Not all 5.0L headers will fit your 98 block, your 98 block probably has the P heads.

The 98 block is also OBD-II wiring, EEC-V, will require some reasearch, there are several additional things required over your previous EFI MAS OBD-I wiring systems...
Also the 98 Explorer PCM isequipped with PATS (anti theft) and without the PATS module and the key the PCM wont run......can be burned out, possbily wired to fool it.

I wish I could help more, I am currently doing the wiring for my 88 Bronco II converted to a 97 Explorer 5.0L with AODE (4R70W)

Aren't they very similar to GT-40 heads??

GT-40P heads have a different spark plug angle than older Ford heads including the GT-40. I should not have an issue with this as I have AFR185s on the 331 motor.

The EEC-V and OBDII issues are what I have heard rumors about. Can you recommend any sites that discuss potential issues? Anyone on here modified their stock 5.0 with add-ons?
