If you've done a free mod to your explorer... or really cheap (less than $20) post it here, lets see if we can give eachother some ideas.

Hmm... I personally have tightened the slack on my throttle cable so i can now get open throttle.... and at the same time pretty much watch my gas gauge drop :).
I'm also planning on putting in a piece of aluminum as a heat shield for my air intake.

dryer duct cold air intake

I don't really have any, but for the dumb people like me, could everyone post write-ups or steps on how to do the mods.

Thanks!!

to keep this half clean, if you post a write up, start it as a new post in the correct section and link to it :) please :)

throttle cable mod (free if you have zipties), removed emblems and other ugly crap (free but takes an hour or so to get off all the gooey crap), removed teh air silencer back when i had the stock intake (easy 1 min job), going to make a little air scoop to my intake from behind my big fenders (should be pretty easy and cheap), looked behind my rear seats to vacume up loose crap and find 3 bucks worth of loose change :)

removed stock airbox and cut it in half, leaving rear intact as a heat-shield of sorts... throttle cable mod... removed screen from MAS sensor and polished the inside with Dremel tool (gained no hp, but the inside of my MAS is now really pretty:p )... removed spare (less weight)... always seem to run on a 1/4 tank (less weight)... added drain plug to tranny $8... added magnetic drain plug to engine $4... removed stock pinstripes/sidemoldings/roof rack crossbars... polished inside of throttle body (no hp, but again, pretty)... and will soon paint my brake calipers (under $6).

Please detail how you did this mod? Ant pics?

Thanks.....

bought a magnetic plug at Autozone same as stock (you have to ask for it at the counter)... used B&M tranny drain plug for my tranny. remove pan, drill hole (forgot what size) and install. i put mine on the side of the low-hanging dimple of the pan (not sure if this dimple is 4R70W only or not). dont have pics, but if you really want to see it, give me about a week to get film developed and i will scan it...

where is the air silencer and how easy is it to remove it?

judging by the looks of all the ricers out there, I would think that the best mod you could get for the money is lots and lots of decals. I think the ratio is something like you get an extra 4 horsepower per every 10 decals you have on there. plus your grocery cruiser will look like you just got off the set of the fast and the furious with all them cool decals. damn I love those decals, spend about 20 bucks on those things and that's a quick 50 hp no problem. well the only problem is to decide whether to get the japanese letters that no one, including yourself, can read or to get those crazy cartoon samurai guys, hmmmm.......

oh, and another cheap mod is rocker panels rusted to hell (less weight)

Rob

free/cheap stuff ive done: drilled airbox. body colored emblems, gutter gaurd grill inserts, wash/wax, remove pin stripes, remove roof rack...hmm, just see my sig.

gutter gaurd grill inserts

I got that one, that's about the only free/cheap thing I've done so far.

I would heavily recommend doing this. On mine, it's really not noticeable at all, and at first I thought it sucked. But then people started saying, "I don't know what it is, but your grill just looks different than other Explorers. I like it."

It takes a Haynes manual, some chicken wire, some zipties, and a little time.

huh? any pictures of this gutter gaurd... i don't understand it. sounds neat though

I don't have any pictures, but it's just taking gutter guard (or chicken wire or whatever) and putting it behind your grill.

There are some pics in the thread Dead Link Removed if you feel like reading through it all.

I'm real new here so please have some patience,

When you where talking about drilling the air box? you mean the box that holds the air filter?
Does it help milage? or just get the filter dirty faster? I honestly don't know, and it sounds like I could even do this one.

Thanks in Advance

A writeup on the throttle cable adjustment would be great, havent read much about it but sounds like something worthwile to do :)

Yes drilling the airbox refers to drilling holes in the airbox which is what holds your air filter, it lets air in easier / with less restriction so your engine can breathe easier, you may get 1/2mpg better milage and your X will probably sound a little cooler. You could also go with a KKM Intake but that is more than just a few dollars :)
