Last week on my way to work all of a sudden i heard a clunking, and turns out, my front drive shaft went bad on me. Seems very uncommon. I replaced it fairly cheap by myself. took 15 mins. Anyone else have this problem? I've got a '97 XLT.

For future readers, how did your driveshaft go "bad"?

Was it the U-joint that connects it to the front axle?
Or the CV that connects it to the transfer case?

The CV was shot. I had a friend replace it at school, but he told me that the CV was dry, bearings musta been shot. I'm not familiar with the transfer case so im in the dark to what goes on in there exactly.

Gotcha -- thanks for clearing that up :D

Sorry to hijack the thread.. A buddy of mine has an '00 V6 explorer 4x4 and needs his front drive shaft replaced. Since I've never been under a 2nd gen are there any threads on how to remove and re-install the front DS? :help:
