I have a 4X4 2002 Explorer Sport. Do I need to remove the front drive shaft to be able to remove the fuel filter ?

No, and there is a sticky at the top of the forum describing how to replace the fuel filter.

Good luck, you may have to call in a dentist. Getting that thing out is like pulling teeth!

No, just have to remove the 2 aluminum cover plates (one on top of the other) that protect the filter from road debris. It is located along the passenger side frame rail up infront of the gas tank. You will need to get a fuel filter removal tool to seperate the fuel lines from the filter. They sell them or kits in parts stores. Some aftermarket fuel filters have an "arrow" marked on them for the direction they face/fuel flow to engine. The point of the arrow head should face the engine/front of vehicle when installing the new one.

I guess I am the only one with a 2002 Explorer Sport 4X4 V6 that has the fuel filter and tank located on the 'driverside' with the front drive shaft running along side of it.

If you have a Sport you posted in the wrong forum, use the 1995-2001 Explorer Forum for an Explorer Sport. Its a different animal than the regular Explorer.

Here is You Tube video from that forum:

Maybe you could post a picture of your fuel filter to help us out.
