I just did mine today and found it to be odd in a way.
Once you have the disconnect tool inserted all the way, hold it there and twist the filter while pulling it away from the fuel line. Once it is starting to move away, pull the disconnect tool away and out.
My mustang fuel lines were much easier than these to disconnect.
I agree this is odd, almost stubborn, a previous94 ex, and all the stangs and tbirds I have done were never this stubborn. Thanks for the info, I will try it later.
What does this special disconnect tool look like? The one I have looks like an X but it has a rivet in the middle to allow the tool to fit around two size fuel lines. Is this the correct tool? I cant get my filter off. I have a 2000 EXPLORER. Any one have any ideas? BTW Im replacing the filter hoping it will fix a problem when shifting from 1st to 2nd gear, the engine seems starved for gas.
