I got my oil changed yesterday, and the guy doing my change brought me over to my car and said that I needed to clean my fuel injection system. He showed me two bottles of stuff (some sort of mineral spirits or something), and some sort of pressurized can with clear tubing coming out of it and said that the process involved pumping the cleaner through my fuel injection system while the engine was running. My questions are threefold:

1) Does this sound like something legit? My 01 explorer has 70k miles on it, so I was guessing that it wouldn't hurt to have it done, but I was EXTREMELY wary of taking the advice of a place that does oil changes.

2)How much better is this way than going to the store and buying that fuel injection system cleaner in the bottle and dumping it into your gas tank?

3) Could I possibly do this myself? The guy wanted 60 bucks for the job. Looking at what he was going to use, I figured I could buy everything outright for about 30 bucks and clean the fuel injection system of every car I own.

Any help would be appreciated!

I put a can of Sea Foam in my gas tank with about an 1/8 tank of fuel. Every oil change.

I've done that type of fuel injecter cleaning before.. Using my jobber prices I still paid over $50 per bottle for motorcraft injector cleaner.

I used the pressurized injector cleaner bottle that my neighbors shop had on hand (for just this purpose)..

Basically you fill the bottle with the cleaner.. turn off the fuel pump (I hit the inertial fuel cutoff switch with a rubber mallet) and block off the return line from the fuel pressure regulator.

You basically run the truck on the injector cleaner ( I used two bottles)..

Our injectors needed it.. they had over 200k miles on them.. Since then I've run acetone in the fuel (4 ounces per 20 gallons) and BerryMans b-12 in the fuel every 15k miles or so (not at the same time)..

The injectors I'm using have 375k miles on them (all except one that I replaced 50k+ miles ago becuase it was leaking)

I found a lot of good posts about how to do that especially with SEAFOAM on the forums here, try a search for fuel injection or SEAFOAM..
