Hey everyobody, I've decided to replace my fuel pump on my 91 ex, and thought I would come looking for a little help/advice before I really break something. I've opted for the access hole method, and have my hole cut out already, but here's where I'd like some advice.

first here is what I got so far:

First, am I suppose to be able to unplug those wires? I tried giving them a little tugging, but they didn't move. was gonna try prying with a flat screwdriver or try pulling hard with the aid of pliers but thought it be best to ask first before breaking something...

Second, what size of disconnect tool should I be using? the lines seem to have 2 different sized ends. The smaller one came off pretty easy with the 3/8th one, but the larger one didn't seem to wanna move... :p

Thanks
Brendan

All of the wires for the fuel pump join at a pigtail after about a foot of wire from the tank. The connector is mounted to the frame so you may need to unplug it from under the vehicle. As for the tool size I don't remember offhand what size I used. Just find what size fits best and be persistent.

james is right, the connector for the pump is on the left hand frame rail .take out your spare and get under the truck and find the connector ,there will be a small keeper that holds the harness in there ...that will have to come off the rail before you can unplug it .

before you start mark the direction of the fuel lines and how they connect to the pump ( a diff direction could stress the lines and damage may happen ) i used a sharpie majic marker when i did mine .

by the look of it you'll need a new ring .soak it down with wd-40 and let it sit then get a small metal punch with a concave tip ...then hit each tab on the ring ( works better that way because your not just trying to put all the pressure of un-locking the ring on just one tab ) .

other than that... make sure before you pull the pump out that you get a vac and clean up all the rust debrie you created around the pump opening ( you don't want rust trash in you tank) and also make sure you new pump came with a new "o-ring" as well ( it sits under the plate of the pump where it and the tank meet )

buy a new lock ring also. you might rip it up trying to get the old 1 off an for the few buxs its worth its worth replacing.

can you please tell me where exactly to make this hole to get this direct access to the f.pump?

Definitely follow the previous suggestions and get a new lock ring BEFORE pulling the pump out..do a visual inspection and make sure you get the right lock ring, too.

The access hole method sucks since it can be pretty tough to reach the pigtail on those wires with the tank in the way.

As for disconnecting the lines, one lines disconnects easy since the large side of the tool is more than deep enough to free the locking teeth. The other line has slightly deeper teeth that the tool is juuuust too shallow to reach all the way in, so you wind up having to grab the line, and push the line into the tool while pushing the tool into the line for that extra hair of distance that will release it. Or you could try to find another disconnect tool with a slightly longer depth.

Something else you might consider while you have the pump out is sticking a (clean) magnet down in the tank and picking up whatever rust has made it's way in there.

when i dropped mine it did have debrie in there but mostlly around the pick-up screen area ......for the stuff i could not wipe or clean up i had to get a penny a scape off the stuff that had cemented it's self to the tank ....not a lot mind you but enough that made me clean it cause i did not want to have a new pump got out becasue of trash in the tank .
