well, i have narrowed the surge, missing issue down to fuel pressure.
ran vehicle for 200 + miles and was able to duplicate failures.
conditions were always at least 90 deg f. fuel press was 65psi until slow driving, would fall to 20 and ocilliate, engine followed suit.
the haynes manual says to check regulator, but vehicle is only equipped with damper on injector rail. i will replace the pump, as i have no confidence in it, but the question remains: why does the manual say to check something the vehicle is obviously not equipped with? note: the fender vacuum chart also only lists a dampner.
does anybody have any reliable tech data that shows the changes, or can recommend a more concise manual?
it is interesting to note that 2 fuel pumps are available, with different output pressures. thanks all

there are two types of fuel systems in those years, one is a lower pressure system with a regulator and a return line that runs around 35psi. The other (which is what I have) is the higher pressure return less style system with surge unit on the rail that runs at about 62PSI.

If you have the return less system, you actually do have a FPR, however it is located in the tank with the pump. And I think you can only purchase them as a unit so replacing one will fix the other

incidentally have you checked the fuel pump relay? they can act very screwy when they start to go bad...

have not checked the relay, but i will. the thing leading me to the pump is the issue of temprature, i.e., only when pretty hot. note: when it did it's thing yesterday, a quick spritz of cooling water brought everythig right back.
where is the relay? if its quick, i can check it before i go home.

The relay is under the hood in the fuse block, if you don't have the diagram you can hear(and feel) it click when you turn the key on.

Where did you spray water to get it to run properly?

around the rails a bit and the feed lines

R2'D the pump assy, regulated pressure now at spec. regulator on pump assy was bad, would not allow back pressure build up, so on hot days, it actually did pretty much vapor lock.
thanx for the help, i am sure i will be around more, lots of good info here.

it's amazing that the truck even ran with such a low pressure, and didn't throw a code.
