gas gauge paradox

so i have a 91 explorer xlt, whose gas gauge has a small quark. it works most of the time in the hot start loop but after that is goes to empty. it only works in that loop even if the tank is completely full.

any thoughts would be appriciated

ahh, the infamous gas gauge (almost everyone has a problem whith it sometime, for those who own a 1st gen) i dont know why your gauge only works when the truck starts up, but i can give you somethings that might be causing it not to work. It could be (and i would check first) is the wires behind the dash, for the gas gauge. could be the sending unit, in the tank or the float, or both. do a couple of searches,too.
