My wife and I just bought a 1992 XLT 4X4 w/automatic transmission. The gas gauge does not work. Until I get it in to get the sending unit looked at/replaced (when my 6/49 ticket comes in) I want to know how many kms I can go on one tank of gas (worst/best case scenarios). I have a 73 litre tank, I think. Thanks in advance for the help!

350km's from full is fairly safe no matter how you drive.....

the most i ever got and this was mostly hwy km was about 550km and the least i ever got was about 225km all city and driving hard...

I'm in the same boat, except I'm lifted 6", running 33's with 4:10's. I fill up as soon as my odometer hits 300.

400km for me if it's wintertime and I'm driving nicely. That's with a 4.0L V6.

When I had OD, I got approx. 500 km. on a tank. I lost my OD last year, (ground problem) and I got approx. 400km. on a tank.
Hope this helps bud!

Fuel Consumption

50/50 Combination of hiway and city with 4.0 Auto 4x4
I get 14.5 - 15 Litres per 100 km.
Therefore:
71.9 Litres capacity maxxed out to the very neck = 495 Km. at 14.5 per 100km or 475 Km at 15.

Government stats say 10.2 per 100km = 705 km per tank on hwy in a 2WD 5 spd standard.
or 12.4 per 100km = 580 km per tank on hwy in a 4.0V6 Auto 4x4.

But anyone that says they get better than 500 Km from a tank is either towing it on a flatdeck or has found a very long hill. :D

I've had my explorer for 10 years now and I've stopped worrying about mileage, it's just too depressing.

You probably don't need the sending unit

Bruce, as a lot of us have found out, the float attached to the sending unit in the tank is responsible for the malfunctioning gas gauge, not the sending unit.

I used a foam float from an S-10 sending unit to fix my '93 Exploder, the brass float had the side rotted out of it...

Cheap fix.

Fuel Consumption

As requested:

city 15 - 17 mpg -> 15.68 L/100km - 13.84L/100km
highway 19 -21 mpg -> 12.28 L/100km - 11.2 L/100km

Fuel Tank (US Gallons) 19.00 -> 71.92L

4.0L 145 hp V6

Horsepower(HP) 145 @ 5000 RPM
Torque (lb-ft) 180 @ 3650 RPM
Valves/Valve Configuration 12/OHV
Displacement (cc) 3982
Bore X Stroke (in.) 3.50 X 3.14
Compression Ratio 9.0:1
Fuel Type/System Gas/SEFI

Total Driving Distance:

city 15.68 L/100km - 13.84L/100km => 458.67 Km - 519.65 Km
highway 12.28 L/100km - 11.2 L/100km => 585.67 Km - 642.14 Km

this is the fuel capacity on a full tank of gas, now depending on how the vehicle is driven plus the idling, you will lose about 100 Km worth of fuel, thus the fuel capacity for the 1992 Explorer XLT 4x4 is between 458.67 km and 542.14 km. Also take the factor of the wear and tear of the engine and the constant use of the engine everyday for hte past 15 years, you will get approximately give or take about 20 - 25 km, thus the fuel capacity should be 430 - 520 km on a full fuel tank.

Hope this helps, I had to convert some of this stuff from US to Canadian units. So i put both units here.

:exp:
cheers

ok. Ima bout doin 500 - 550 kilometers on this current tank... Ima just about to call bluff on anyone else claimin more than this because... When I drive my exploder - i try to keep the gas pedal soft - try to keep rpm's at or below 2000 and i do about the following...

average weekday drive...

Leave home...
stage 1: 1 - 2 k city 50 kph,
stage 2: 10 k highway at 100 Kph,
stage 3: 1-2 k at congestion area (bridge <50kph)
stage 4: 10 k highway at 100 kph,
stage 5: 1 - 2 k city 50 kph, arrive at office.

Stage 6 thru 10 = reverse of same...

so - total aprox 50 km per day, averaged over 1 year - = 14.5 - 15.0 liters / 100kms.

average = 50 kilometers per day

yearly avg = 50 x 200 work days = 10,000 km's year @ 15 liters per 100 km = 1500 liters x current price @1.20$ C = $1800/year or $150 per month

I too get 15 liters per 100kms

<GRIN> Better mileage

:D
On my recent trip through mountain highway roads averaged 11.1 L/100km which is BETTER by >10% :thumbsup: than government website (for 4WD Auto 4dr)

= 25.4 MPG Imp or
= 21.3 MPG US or
= 645 km range per tank or
= 400 miles
