I had a leakage problem that the service guy says was the return line to the gas tank.
He said it had rusted off.....costing me 511.00 for a new sending unit and new gas lines.
Anyone else had that problem??

But I'm not done yet.

Now if I fill the tank the fuel leaks out from the top of the tank....Same service guy says the I need a new tank as the outer locking ring (molded into the poly tank has rusted so badly that I needs replaced.....

Any suggestions on where to get a new tank for a 91 expolrer...ford quoted me almost $400.00.....

Hep me Mr Wizard!!!

run a search for "gas tank" and read (lots of posts about how to R&R). You can replace the locking ring yourself. They may have tried to reuse the old one (which you can't), and are trying to get you for double the labor charge.

I had a leak in one of the sending unit lines; it had rusted out. I'm not sure which line was leaking, but the leak was only with the truck leaking. The fuel system wasn't holding pressure, so I'd have to crank it for a while before it would start if the Explorer had been sitting for a while.

I dropped the tank myself and changed the unit. New fuel pump and sending unit assembly was about $85, and the locking ring was $10 from a dealer. It was a real pain, but I probably would do it myself again if I were saving $400.

Your shop is jerking your chain, and should fix the problem for no charge. When they had the tank down, they should have been able to tell if there was any problem with the reinstallation of the locking ring and the resulting seal. I can't imagine that they could have reused the existing ring; mine was so rusted that it just mangled when I removed it, but the tank part was fine.

Good luck

The problem is the ring that is attached to the tank.
They DID advise me that I MIGHT need a new tank. But thought it might hold.

I have found a replacement used tank at a local boneyard for 50.00.

Looks like I have some work to do...

Thanks all
