Gasoline Fumes from under hood...

Sometimes when I shut the explorer off, i smell gasoline. best way to describe it is when i had a chevy s-10, if i pumped the pedal to much before starting, it would smell "flooded". this is kinda how it smells now, but only occsionally.

someone in another thread that this has activated charcoal in it that absorbs gas tank fumes or something, and stores them until the engine is started. could the charcoal be old and needing refilled/replacement?

also, i've checked EVERYWHERE, gas tank, gas fill line, fuel lines, fuel filter, fuel rails, everywhere it goes, and there's not a leak. i've looked with it off, on, just having been run hard, and having been run slight. so i don't have a leak.

Sound like the injectors are leaking. They are sometimes hard to tell if they are leaking. Do an injector leak down test.

guess it's time to search how to take them out, and how the hell you do the "leak down" test.

Not sure how to test the injectors. But it's a lot of work to get them out so before you do that test your fuel pressure. Measure the pressure with the engine running and then shut the truck off and see how quickly the pressure drops.

no no no dont start taking out your injectors, your canister purge valve is likely bad, and your charcoal canister likely needs to be replaced (late model junk yard is easiest way)

canister purge valve on these trucks will stick closed when they go bad, so the fumes from the tank instead of getting sucked into the intake they just sit in the charcoal canister and saturate it.

Ever notice this the most when you get off the highway and stop?
smells like raw fuel from the engine bay = first check for fuel leaks, fire is not your friend
then check hoses and connections on canister purge solenoid, if all hoses are okay then try a new solenoid. replacing the charcoal canister is a good idea also, I know when I got rid on mine from my 88 with about 270K miles on it, it stank!

A purge valve shouldn't give you a fuel smell after shutoff so much as on a cold start. A vent valve might, but somehow I think it's more likely a leaky hose on the purge side.

but isnt the purge valve under the upper intake manifold? when i had my top end undone replaceing my injectors i belive i saw it on top of the engine on the drivers side .josh if you replace the purge valve you may end up haveing to buy new upper intake gaskets (upper and lower ones... 2 total) .try to buy the felpro's with the blue rubber surround ...i've used them with no problems .

I seem to have a leak somewhere also. I think mine is coming from the fuel return line, which is on the frame rail, just under the driver side door. I'm going to replace that part of the line soon... I've had a few friends that had the same problem. Might want to check there. Hope this helps... someone! lol

Also.. I hear it was common with the older Bronco's as well...

the canister purge valve on the 93-94 is under the upper intake, but you can get to it without removing the intake manifold, ford simply stuffed it under there

I smell mine as soon as I open my door. I looked up under there once and theres a rubber hose on the return line with no clamp and it's loose... think thats my prob! Just got too many other things going on right now to worry about it. Girlfriend is 29 weeks prego and has been in and out of labor for the last 2 weeks or so.... FUN FUN! Wish me luck!

It definately should be your cannister purge valve or purge flow sensor. They are mounted in line with one another. Ford had a Technical Service Bulletin on these a few years ago for this problem.. Your problem could be as simple as cracked vac. lines in your fuel vapor system. Check all the lines going to your charcoal cannister. The cannister usually doesn't go bad unless you do a lot of off roading and get water/mud in it.
