Has anyone done a gear swap in the front axle of a Gen 1 Explorer and gone from 3.27's to 4.10's without doing a carrier swap? I'm seeing conflicting data on whether the carrier has a break at 3.55 or not.

yes you can do it, i got pictures on a thread somewhere. There is no carrier break for the Dana35 TTB

i went from 3.27 to 4.56 with the stock carrier. I actually bought a 3.73 carrier to confirm this, no difference in hieght what so ever. In my pictures it looks like there is a miniscule difference, but there isnt. There is no such thing as a miniscule carrier break, it was either the way i angled the camera or how i had the bearing pressed on that made it look like the 3.27 carrier was a 1/16" taller. But even then, if there was a carrier break, the 3.55 carrier would be taller, not the 3.27.

I was worried about the same thing when I regeared from 3.27s. I ordered Yukon 4.10s from Randy's and they indicated I wouldn't need a new carrier. They gear install (local speed shop) went off with no problems...

This was confirmed on the rrorc boards aswell.

There is a lot of conflicting information on this, its because people get misled from other makes which follow dana's rules for carrier breaks. Just keep in mind, Ford uses 'thick gears' on all their cooperate differentials. Bascially, Ford doesnt sell anything that uses carrier breaks.
