posting an update of sorts- this has had a 12 volt draw since I got it. Finally figured out what it was- the aftermarket radio was the culprit. Someone pulled the 12 volt battery from the light switch, I disconnected it, and the draw went away. I used an ATO fuse tap at the fuse box for the 12 volt memory, and no draw.
Also, purchased another parts Bronco 2, not running, 5 speed, I think it jumped time at the timing chain. Going to trailer it to Nevada, from my place in Oregon.

found another '94 Explorer, $400.00, going to use the engine, and am thinking of building a Frankentranny out of the A4LD. Started the removal of the engine, pulled the pan from the trans., the fluid was dark red, and it had clutch material in the pan. No metal was present.

Going a different route. Picked up a used M5OD from a "94 Explorer, ordered a new flywheel, and clutch for it. Does anyone know if the flywheel bolts for the 2.9 M/T are the same?

The 4.0 is out of the donor!

The 4.0 is ready to install... replaced the oil pump, water pump, oil pan, and cam sensor.

pulled the dash to install the clutch pedal, clutch master, and to merge the harnesses.

Well done, removing the dash is not required but it will make things a whole lot easier while its out
Its funny to see behind the old dash and how it evolved over the years......so much more simple in 1986

Not sure if you wanted to do this but anytime I do a 4.0 with a 5 speed I use the SOHC clutch. For the earlier 4.0 6 bolt flywheel you have to have some holes drilled and tapped to accept the larger clutch pressure plate....but the benefit is more grip and a better clutch feel.

Thanks for the heads up on the clutch, but having already purchased a clutch kit and new flywheel, l'm already committed to what I have. I am also replacing the heater core, and evaporator, and with the A/C box out of the way, the engine compartment is much roomier.

Pulled the heater boxes today, the ECM, and engine harness. Going to replace the heater core, A/C Evaporator, and reseal the heater box.

This is so cool
I remember taking out the 2.9 and putting in a 4.0 with 5 speed many years ago, my bii was even blue!
I have always said since that first 4.0 swap that the ohv 4.0 + Bronco II = fun fun fun super reliable powerful fun to drive and capable
The bored and stroked 2.9 aka pushrod 4.0 is so much better suited to motivating the mighty BII

Have most of the wiring done, reinstalled the dash, have the fuel lines replaced for the 4.0, going through the rest of the circuits.
Had to run the wires from the speed sensor to the ECM, figured out the A/C power, and cruise control. Almost ready to install the engine.

Nice! You will want to put the hvac box in place before the engine goes in it makes it much easier to bolt up
