I have never done it, but a lot of the people here talk about idle problems being related to the IAC-Idle Air Control.

Sometimes they stick and just need cleaning but most likely would need replacing.

Bu, don't replace cuz I said so. I am just trying to start you in the right direction.

Brian

Does your check engine light come on and stay on while it is running?

Do a search on these boards for MAS and IAC, good place to start.

Have you replaced the fuel filter?

How many miles on it?
When did this start happening?
Has it slowly gotten worse or was it all of a sudden?

Thanks guys....and to answer some questions:

My car has about 121,000 miles on it, and as far as we know the fuel filter has never been changed (my dad is on his way to the parts store as we speak!!). The check engine light does not stay on, it goes off once the car starts.

So, does it look like the fuel filter now???

I would scan and read the trouble code(s).

Good luck.....

I used to have a '93 Ex. as well and sometimes when i would pull out of the driveway(mine's kinda steep) it would actually die. I would just have to give it more gas to help it out. I never really did anything about it because i got rid of it soon after that started happening, but it sounds to me like a fuel pump...Am I right???

Well these problems can be difficult to diagnose.

There are three basic things to check
1. Fuel
2. Spark
3. Air

1. Fuel - When you first turn the key to the ON position (not start) you should hear the fuel pump in the gas tank (under drivers side rear seat) come on for about 2 seconds. If it sounds like it is gurgling, then it could be at fault. If it comes on, sounds healthy, shuts off, then you need to check for fuel pressure at the fuel rail (on the pass side of the engine, sharader valve looks like a bike tire fill up) Careful there is a bunch of pressure in there, press the vavle down briefly and see if it comes shooting out (use a rag so it doesnt go everywhere. this will tell you if you at least have fuel pressure at the engine

2. Spark. Pull the #1 spark plug wire and check for spark while the starter is being cranked. You said it runs for a second then shuts off, which probably means that your sprak is just fine.

3. Air/Vacuum. It is not uncommon for the early Explorer's (like yours) to have the lower intake gasket leak because the lower intake manifold bolts work themselves loose. This is a little more tricky to detect, so try the fuel stuff first then get back to us. (less typing)

Dont start throwing $$$$ at it, meaning dont go replacing parts yet, the fuel filter is cheap, and also a real pain ti replace, and it should be replaced every few years.

Yours is a 91 so it has a MAP sensor and a single oxygen sensor. These things can cause this situation, but we can worry about those after you eliminate the fuel system as the problem....

My guess is either the fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel pressure regulator, or fuel pump relay from what you describe....

Do you have a Chiltons manual?
Does it blow smoke when it's running?
Do you smell "rotten eggs"?

Do you have a Chiltons manual? NO
Does it blow smoke when it's running? NO
Do you smell "rotten eggs"? NO

I think my dad is dead set on replacing the fuel filter at this moment....so I will let him make himself happy and go from there. I hope that it is something easy....I hate car troubles....thank goodness for dad's!!! :D

You need a special tool to replace the fuel filter on an Explorer, it is a real PITA to do, just have him ask at the parts store they will know what tool he needs.......

Also the system is pressurized and needs to be bled before he unplugs the fiter or gas will spray and spill all over him, not good if daddy catches fire........there is a simple proceedure to get 90% of the pressure out..

This is why I aksed if you have a Chiltons manual, it tells you all this stuff...

Thanks....I just called to remind him to pick up the special tool LOL. We will check out all the other stuff when he returns. Thanks again for all of your help.

He's also picking up a book so we'll know what the heck we're doing.

Good luck! Too bad you posted this now, I was in Houston this morning :)

Keep your eyes peeled here, we're gonna be organizing Houston get-togethers every 6 weeks or so.

Hey Alec :)

Yes this started this morning, but I needed to get to work pronto so I didn't take the time to look up the problems. Got a ride to work and called dear 'ol dad to come to the rescue. So he drove over from Louisiana to help out his wonderful daughter :D . Now he's out picking up the second round of parts....first he thought it was the air filter...and yes that helped a little but it still has problems staying running. Thanks for your offer of help....I may need it another time LOL. He should be back soon and hopefully everything will be all fixed up. I'll be sure to keep y'all posted for sure!

If the air filter seemed to help then you need to clean your MAS sensor ASAP and also clean the IAC.
You can find the info here with the search feature.....

Just thought maybe I should give you a little hint.
Alec is a doctor (o.k. a doctor want to be!!) :)
For someone that looks like he is afraid to get his hands dirty he really knows his Explorer's.

Not sure if anyone has already said it, but welcome to the board.......
Hopefully people here can help you (I mean help your dad) when problems come up on your Explorer, and if you get the chance you will have to do a run with the Texan group, they are a great group.....(even if they are Texans!!!)

:D
