god gave me snow.. tires failed.

we got a good wet snow today with a few inches laid down and im very disappointed in my tires to say the least. sure they are knock off wal mart bfg's so i wasnt expecting much but i had to put the truck in 4wd to take off from stop lights in slush!

when the tax refun check gets here i'm going to be getting some 33s and want something that is durable. so far im sticking with BFG's cause ive always had good wear out of them. I need a tire that is as good in the dirt as it is in the snow yet handles and wears exceptionally well. I was happy with my T/A KO's but was thinking about a MT. Which am i gonna be more satisfied with?

the truck sees mild-moderate trails, a few good snows each winter, rain and a little mud. not looking for anything too hardcore, nothing like a super swamper. any feedback is appreciated guys!

...I would get the AT KO's if it's going to be your daily driver and it will handle better on wet surfaces too...I have wheeled hard on AT's any time I wanted to...

...A good thing to do is get some brand new AT's...Buy some used MT's and mount them on a set of wheels for throw on tires if you want/need to...

My Cooper discoverer STT, suck in the snow their somewhere between a M/T and an A/t, with my AWD I was spinning all 4 tires with the back end coming out constantly and braking almost wasn't there with abs kicking in every time I tried to stop. I have already aired them down and it did not help, my friend in his cherokee in 2wd was getting better traction than I did with his Destination A/Ts. I would stick with an A/T if there is any snow driving.

yeah.. you really cant beat the T/A KO. i was hoping to get some more feedback on someone running BGF MTs in the snow.. if anyone has any input please, i wanna hear it! thanks guys for all the comments!

I just slapped some general grabber at2 on my ex and they handle very nice in the snow so far which includes a couple of snow storms here in wisconsin. But as far as the bfg are concerned. I got a friend who has a 97 jeep cherokee that he just replaced his bfg a/ts for some m/t. He hasn't used the m/ts in the dirt yet but said they are definetly worse in the snow then the a/ts were. I guess he could really tell a difference in snow performance between the two. He had pretty good luck wheeling and muddin in those a/ts and stood behind them 100%. I think he switched for the more aggresive look.

For snow running, you need a tyre that sits on top of the snow, and actually binds the snow to the tyre - it's the snow on snow that gives the grip. An MT pattern will have no chance of doing that as MTs are designed to clean quickly. You want an A/T - something like Yokohama Geolander AT or Cooper ATR or Eldorado ATZ or BFG A/Ts, or Hercules Terra Trac ATs - so many different brands - whatever you get, make sure they at least have the M+S rating.

i was actually looking into the generals.. since they share the same tread pattern as the BFG T/A KOs, and are a good big cheaper too. thanks for the responses guys. i guess i will be sticking with an AT tire!

True, A/T's will do better in snow that M/T's. For snow you want a large number of small edges in the tread and for mud you want a smaller number of large edges.
My new Sport Trac came with Goodyear Fortera HL's, curiously it goes and turns very well in snow but doesn't stop for crap and the ABS gets a real workout.
For what it's worth, on my previous Sport Trac I had Bridgestone Dueler REVOs and they were great in snow.

i've been looking for new tires lately bc i'm getting close to throwing on a 3" BL and want to get some 33's. and i've been seeing tons of good reviews for the Firestone Destination MT's. i have only seen maybe 2-3 bad comments about them. all the reviews say they have great tread life, with most of the people running them saying that their getting over 50k miles out of a set. their quiet on the road. have a strong sidewall with a rim/bead protector. they're suppose to be great in all weather. but this is just alot of what the reviews i've read said. i haven't actually used these tires myself and i've only known one person to have these tires and his little bow tie was an asphalt queen like the rest of them. one of my friend's at a local tire shop says they've been selling them like crazy bc they haven't found anything bad about them yet.

They look good, but the tyres aren't siped - sipes are the little cuts in the tread that tend to hold the snow. doen't mean they're no good in snow, but something like the BFG A/T or similar patterns should be a better overall tyre, just not as good in mud.

if snow and slush are a big issue - i would consider Nokian WR's and WRG2's (the WRG2 is the newer model that has some improvements). I have had WR's on my 2005 EB and they are by far the best year round tire in the snow i have ever used. i barely have to turn on my 4 wheel drive. they are also great in the rain. they carry the snowflake symbol for severe winter service as well.

i paid $664 installed for the WR's. They carry a 50k warranty, rate Traction A and Temp A, and are rated 500 for treadwear.

while we're on the subject.. is anyone running the goodyear wrangler silent armor AT's? a friend of mine can get a really good deal on the silent armors. they are priced comparibly with the BFG ATs. the last set of goodyear wrangler GSAs i had were horrible.

that's true, but it's only around $70 to get them siped. and your going to be spending alot of money buying a set of MT's, so you could always spend the little bit extra amount

My buddy has those Firestone Destination MT's on his Ranger. I haven't asked much, but as far as I know he's had no problem in the snow with them. The biggest problem with those tires is ice (then again, not many tires are good with glare ice) and sometimes rain. The problems he's had with rain are just taking off on pavement. MT's are the balls for going through deep water and mud, obviously.

As previously mentioned, though, you could go with some MT's and get them siped, and they would probably do pretty good in just about everything.

Oh, btw - as having ridden in his ranger with those tires, I can say the road noise isn't too bad. It's noticeable, but once you get going fast it turns into more of a hum, and less of being able to feel each lug. But with any Mud tire it's going to have some noise.

The BFG KO's were the best snow tire I ever used. The BFG Mud tires sucked in the snow but when I had a little farm I needed the mud tires to get in and out of the fields they were far better for that than the KOs for offroading.

I have the Liberator A/T's from WalMart on my sport and they've done great in the snow....night and day difference between them and the Wrangler's on my Blazer,them SUCK in the snow and in the rain.
Cordavon makes some decent tires that are really good in the snow/rain too.

I can tell you my BFG MTs were 200% better in the snow than my Goodyear MT/Rs.
