Goodyears are thumping

It will help the thumping noise to have the tires remounted with the other side facing out. Just switch them on the rim. The thumping will come back but it will be a while.
Tread seperation is usually noticed at very low speed as a side to side motion in the vehicle. It seems to rock side to side. What you have is cupping and some tires do it and some dont, although the Mfg will usually blame it on the vehicle having worn shocks. Good luck with the warantee issue.

i've heard they have a problem w/ feathering, uneven wear, I took mine off at 41k, replaced w/ bfg goodwrich longtrails,, pretty nice, had good use out of them in the past,, good luck,if it hasnt already happend/,, just notice how old this thread is!

heh, I had that happen. I swear it’s a phase in the tires life. But oh well its all good.

I just get discount tire to replace them. Go in 7 times and they tend to bend back for you. I think I am on the 8th tire now. Every single one goes back the Good Year as a defective tire. And the reason why I make them replace it is because the tire wear is fine, and all the shocks and stuff have been replaced or there are no problems. And I am not going to have a tire thump just because it wants to. When it does I take them make and make the tire shop deal with it. Although expect some headache to it though getting time to keep replacing tires for free.

And the reason why I tell them to replace it is because it’s not right. It’s badly manufactured or something. I have one of the original tires still on my truck and it’s never made a noise, and its nearly totally worn and need of replacement. The others though have been replaced 2 times if not 3.

Got the tires with 105k miles on the truck, and lets just say 3 of the tires have no more than 7k of miles on them. And I am at 130k ;)

The manager at one point thought I was pulling some kind of scam, so I just gave him my keys and told him get the car up to 45 or higher and watch/feel it. Well the tires got replaced when he came back. Also it helped that I got a shop to certify everything with the car was fine, no shocks or any issues of that sort.

They also have a nasty habit of getting unbalanced.

Although this newest set seems to be good. All the tires are balanced for 7k miles now. Maybe ill wear this set down. Then I am getting away from good year tires. Biggest POS of a tire ive seen. Although I have a feeling the next set of tires wont be my problem, I get a new vehicle soon :)

Get them off of your truck first chance you can. I had those junkers and they did the same thing :thump like a bad wheel bearing. I took my X to a tire shop a few years back shopping for new tires.I told them that my tires were cupping and feathering. The first thing they asked is if I had the Goodyear RTS and those symptoms were common. I put a :D set of cross terrains on and what a difference in ride and noise. I hated the ride with the RTS and thought there was a problem with suspension. The Michelins finally wore out after 75000 and I may consider the Goodyear SilentArmor or Cross Terrain again. I do all highway driving.

Those Wrangler RT/S tires are garbage....My truck made the same noise till I replaced them with BFG Long trails.
The noise wasn't the main reason I got rid of them, but the serious lack of traction....:(
The RT/S's may be good for making tire swings and other playground equipment....But they are no good for tires...

I'm glad I'm not the only one with this problem. I thought it was a suspension issue or maybe alignment, but I didn't see anything wrong with either of those things. There is some cupping of the inside edge of the right front tire though. I have the infamous Wrangler RT/S tires. I might put that one offender on the rear and see how that changes things.

I put the offending thumping tire on the rear and had an annoying vibration and mild thumping. I though maybe the balance was out so I went to get it balanced and discovered that the tire had thrown a belt. There was an obvious bulge across the tread. I bought a used one to replace it and have had no problems since then. This summer I'll probably get some new tires, definitely not Wrangler RT/S.
