grinding

Maybe you'll find a bad idler pulley bearing or something. Think the bearing in the water pump is making noise?

No didn't appear to be I really only replaced the water pump cause doing the thermostat I was so close already! And I did some painting of pulleys and thermostat housing and the water pump!

So if it doesn't make any noise unless there is weight on wheels, what if you load the suspension without the tires touching the ground?

I can't help but think about the crank thrust bearing for some reason... but you did say that it still does it with the clutch in and/or trans in neutral?

And I love the green. Makes me wish I had done something like that!

Do you mean like jackstands placed as far outward on the ttb as possible? If so that's what I did, that's what makes me think its something with a wheel bearing or something cause the tires have to be on the ground. And yes doesn't matter what gear, or whether the clutch is in or not.

Well, if the front end is not engaged (manual hubs I'm sure) and the front drive shaft isn't turning, shouldn't it be the rear end you are looking at? Vibrations have been known to travel up a drive shaft and sound further forward that they really are. You pretty convinced it's the front wheels?

I would say swap out all the front bearings, and grease and torque to spec some shiny new ones, if the grinding goes away, yay! If not, you now have 4 spare good bearings, and you've eliminated a variable.

Right, forgot you did that.

So just so I have this straight in my dull brain, if you parked at the top of a long hill with the engine off and simply took the brake off in neutral with the clutch out when you hit that speed of 15 - 20 you would start to hear the scraping noise?

Try it, then pry the calipers open a little one side at a time so the pads aren't hard up against the rotors.

Ok so I didn't find a hill but I did get up to 30 or so then killed the engine put it in neutral and slowed and at the same 20ish mph it still made the noise. I am however pretty sure its coming from the rear end now sounds more like right rear. I may just replace all the shoes and drums and hardware and see what happens.

... I vote rear disk upgrade!

I mean, why not? Ya know... while you're there and all.

That's what I have read. I did a home engineered rear disc on my 5.0L and I kept the original, had to turn the nut out a little on the pushrod in the MC. Used caddi calipers and Turbo Coupe rotors.
