This is a 99 Ranger 4WD, 4.0L automatic. 50K, just bought the truck a few weeks ago.

I had noticed a strange clunking/grinding noise that I could only recreate under one condition. Turning left from a stop (like at a 4way stop), accelerating, at about 5-10mph, I would feel a clunk/grind coming from under the truck. It would only happen for a second or two, and would quit as I turned the wheel back straight and sped up. I had heard it maybe 4 times since I've had the truck, and can rarely get it to make the noise when I'm driving. Didn't think much of it since I couldn't hear the noise often.

Yesterday I took my truck on a quick trail run to try out the 4WD for the first time. Didn't do anything even close to hard wheeling, I could have done it all in 2WD easily, but I wanted to be sure the 4WD worked. Didn't have any problems.

Put the truck back in 2WD and started off the trail. As I was leaving the trail, I drove over an area that was quite bumpy, and I noticed a bit of noise (metallic clunk/clanging) coming from underneath the truck. I didn't think much of it at the time, as my Explorer's suspension was quite noisy, and I drove off the trail. When I pulled back onto the paved road, I noticed there was a problem. From a stop, a slow roll, or speeds under 10mph or so, if I sped up a bit (mild gas pedal pressure, not heavy) I would hear a loud, heavy, metallic clunk from underneath the truck- sounded to be anywhere from under the cab to the front of the truck. This same clunk would also happen when I let off the gas, or if I continued to accelerate, it seemed to make more clunking noises as the transmission shifted. I pulled off to a park-n-ride to look under the truck, couldn't find anything suspicious. With anything more than easy gas pedal pressure, the clunk would happen, and then once again when I let off the gas, as well as with each shift under acceleration.

This morning I drove the truck to class, and I heard the sound a few times. Didn't think much of it, guess I was hoping it would go away, but it hasn't. The noise has become louder, and feels like a harder clunk (don't you love these technical terms?) than before. This happens when in 2WD, 4WD, and 4LO, and is louder when you hit the gas harder. I let my dad drive the truck, and as I listened from outside the truck, it sounds like its coming from the transfer case/transmission area.

Being that I have very limited mechanical knowledge, and my dad knows nothing about 4WD systems (and thinks they are a disaster waiting to happen), I'm in a really tough spot right now. I had been unemployed until the past week, and I have only 5 hours this week. My first paycheck comes next Friday, and it will be very small. I've basically got $150 to live off of until I get more money from work. DEFINITELY a horrible time for a mechanical problem. :( I can probably get my dad to forward me the money to fix it, but that's just more money I owe him on top of what I owe him for the truck. :(

The previous owner said his son slid into a ditch, but said that nothing more than the fender and door were repaired/replaced. At this point I'm wondering how extensive the damage really was.

Anyone have any ideas? Like I said, we've pretty much narrowed the noise down to the transfer case/transmission area, but it could be coming from somewhere else. I guess I'm just hoping someone has had this exact thing happen, and can tell me what the problem is, since I can't (and don't want to) have to pay a mechanic or Ford to find the problem. Please don't respond to this thread unless you have a worthwhile contribution, I need every bit of serious help I can get right now. :(

mine does that in 4L, i was driven down a court in my neighborhood in 4L, and the X just slowed way down, by itself no brakes, an not in first gear. after it slowed down, i had windows down, made these 2 loud clunkin sounds as you described. did it twice, an i decided that it wasnt good and put it back in 2wd. mines only got 25K miles on it.

Can't see it being a bushing, it's gotta be something in the drivetrain. I still have the Explorer, so it looks like I'll be driving it for a while... :/

How about the torsion bar adjuster pads??? They are right under the cab, and I know there have been a couple of threads on them wearing out. From what I understand, when they go, you get a clunk or rattle under the truck.

Another thought, could it be a u-joint??

Don't really know what the torsion bar adjuster pad is, but I'm assuming its at the rear mounting point for the torsion bars? I just did the torsion twist on Friday, I'll check in that area in the morning...

Several people on RangerForum.com have suggested the U-joints, I'm gonna make sure to check them out as well.

I HATE wintertime, it's dark before 6PM and now it's too damn cold outside to go work on the truck! :(

I think it is coming from your 4wd system. More specifically the hubs on the front wheels. I am not sure how the new 99 hubs work, but I have heard that they are always enganged.

My theory is this for bigDerk. One of your hubs is bad. If the previous owner said he slid in a ditch, he may have done alot of wheelin in it. The hub may be going bad and "slipping" possibly causing the loud clunking noise.

Remember, your 4X4 system does not like being engaged on solid ground. If you engage it on hard ground where the tires cannot slip the 4wd system will bind. The loud clunking noise you hear is the system unbinding. It will bind worse as you turn on hard surfaces. This is why I think as you turn right it is binding somehow.

Again, I have a 91 and I dont know exactly how the 99 hubs are.

End of class....

Well it doesn't make the noise only when turning, it now makes it under acceleration and also when I'm slowing down. And I'm sure the hubs are totally different on the 99's, they are vacuum activated or something, I don't know anything about them yet. Not sure if the hubs cause the same symptoms as the earlier Explorers when they go bad.

IT'S FIXED!!!

Just fixed the problem! Turns out that the skid plate protecting the transfer case had gotten bent, and the metal "clunk" was the transfer case banging against the corner of it. Took off the skid plate, and it doesn't make the noise anymore!

Still need to get the pass. side CV joint checked out though, since there's grease leaked around the area. I think that is the source of the "grinding" noise when I turn left sometimes, since stress is being put on the right side of the truck.

*HUGE sigh of relief*

Are you gonna re bend the skid plate and put it back on?

Sure am, gonna break out a BFH (big f*ckin hammer) tonight and see if I can't fix that SOB. :)

That's a good idea to fix the skid plate, I know because I took a truck over some railroad tracks at a bad angle and ripped the damn transfer case right off.

I have a feeling the grinding noise you hear on acceleration could be coming from the limited slip plates in the rear differential. Ford makes a friction modifier for the rear end that will stop that noise. Comes in a small tube. Just add it to the rear end grease.

While you're under your truck, check to see if the bolts holding the t-case in place are tight. It shouldn't be moving to be hitting the skid plate. If any bolts are loose, use some thread locker to keep it from happening again.

Whew .

Glad you fixed it easily . I was gonna suggest some Blinker fluid , thats what happened to me awhile back . Blink Fluid ran low and the dam blinker would tic Xtra loud , when turning . But the transfer case rubbing on the skid plate was my 2nd. guess , really . :p
