I am not into cutting my floor so I dropped the tank. Cutting the floor is somewhat risky with the potential to cut the tank or fuel lines. The post is great for cutting the floor, it has good pics but there is one error. Don't pry up on the ears on the tank engaging the locking ring. Simply use your hammer and driver to spin the locking ring and it pulls right off.

I've made access doors for fuel pumps, but not on Explorer's. I'm into big GM station wagons. I have a Caprice and a Roadmaster wagon. Like we all know, they don't quit at convenient times. Having wagons go twice (not the ones I have now), I decided to cut in an access door.

Looking back at it, I'm not sure I'd do it again. Afterall, you'd probably only use it once, maybe not at all.

I took the Caprice wagon to a wagon gathering in VA, about 725 miles away. I brought a spare starter, alternator, coil, waterpump, distributor, fuel pump and a bunch of other stuff, just in case. Well, the one thing I didn't bring was a transmission. As you can guess, that's what went. Flatbedded home 700 miles. I'm not cutting an access panel for the tranny---ha ha.

I guess the moral of the story is, no matter what you do, there is always something else to go wrong.

So glad we got this thread going again and NOW??
It is really complete. Fordfool, silverfox, onuma, 2003vstrom and don't forget (et) Al!
Thank you to all who "came back"!
I aint gonna spend the $1200 to drop the tank.
I will snap some pictures of the job I do in a 2002 Ford Explorer XLT and post them in the most poignant place.

Hi Frank...about to try this possibly. Any comments, assuming it is now a successful repair? Thanks!

has anyone cut a access hole for the fuel pump on a 3rd gen? I was looking at where about where I would have to cut the hole and looks like it would be right behind the front passenger seat thats about where the pick-up area is mold in the tank and info would be great thanks

Looking up from the underside (as easy as that is!) there is a circular indentation near the low point of the tank of my 02 V6 early build eddie bauer. I would guess that's where the fuel pump sits...always been a trust but verify type though. Does anyone have first hand knowledge? Very tempted to do the cut out over the pump to make an access panel...thanks to all once again!
