i could have sworn that i have seen a pic of someone on this site that had his headers runninfg straight to a muffler and his exhaust stopping there. Anyone remember who it was. i have seached hundreds of pages and cannot find it. AM i just imagining things? The pic in particular was from the back looking at the muffler hanging after the headers and i think i remember a comment from the owner saying it was loud, anyone wanna help me out. Im thinking of doing this and wanted some input from someone who has done it. TIA

bump, my open headers sound like dootie, need some help here guys

you know, it is illegal to not have a cat.
even if you don't have emissions testing, it's still a federal law to have a cat.

Yeah i know, I just dont care. Anyone out there seen what i described? Damn, maybe i just imagined it, and I do not want to be the first guy to try it.

Here's mine, it has a single cat on it, when I had a 2.9 I ran without a cat for a long time and with a flowmaster 40 it was incredibly loud. You wont accomplish anything by removing the cat except for more noise and a smelly ass exhaust. At least run a single aftermarket cat, sounds better than factory and keeps the exhaust just as clean.

I can still have 02, first gens are pre cat

Nope i only have one precat that i see on the pass side, maybe another on the drivers side? I just cant afford a whole new exhaust, but figure that if im gonna just pay to get my stock system completed, i might as well make it louder/more of a growl while im down there.

no shop will install an exhaust without a cat, on a vehicle that came OEM with a cat.

Plenty of shops will, i told them i wanted straight pipe installed instead of cats and they said "sure 50 bucks and its good", and that was only the first shop i went to, no telling how many others will.

From the posts I've seen before, you'll not get a lot of info about removing cats. It's illegal and this forum doesn't condone doing anything illegal. That being said, shops here in IA will remove your cats too, one's that specialize in truck performance, only if you tell them that the vehicle is for use off-road only. I told the guy when I called that I would rather keep the cats either way, I'm not trying to be another contributor to smog. And they aren't kidding about the smell. I've removed cats on a couple of my vehicles, mostly just for testing purposes to see if that was what was causing my problems. And every one of them smelled like gasoline extremely bad. Surprised I never got pulled over for it. The universal aftermarket cats aren't overly expensive compared to the direct-fit parts. So I would definitely look into it, granted if you are doing off-road only, it's technically not illegal, but you're still causing damage to the air we all breathe. Good luck.
