I'm getting quite a :D good deal on a 2002 Explorer XLT but it has a knocking sound in the engine :( . Not sure if it's the rocker arm, lifters or what. The sound is continuous and becomes faster when the engine is revved up. What could the problem be, what parts may need to be changed, and how much for parts and labor that may need fixing? Thanks for any help...

Welcome. What engine and how many miles? I hope it's not rod knock. Does it sound like someone hitting the block with a hammer?

welcome

Welcome to Explorer Forum! It sounds like a spun bearing to me.

Engine is the 4liter, miles is 116k and sound is like hammer on a block but not as loud or as strong yet, only rapid according to rev level. Checked oil and level is ok. Will add spun bearing as another possibility.

I appreciate the replies and further info from members.

 Unfortunately it does sound like rod knock. So I second the spun bearing idea. Chances are the engine won't last much longer in this condition. A spun bearing basically means that a complete tear-down and rebuild is necessary. Or you may want to consider a remanufactured long block. I do most of my own work so I don't know how much a mechanic would charge but it won't be cheap.
