!HELP! BW4405 issue

so, 2 days ago my girlfriend and i totaled her daily driver, were on a budget for what we can buy blah blah blah found a super clean good running 1997 ford explorer 4.0AWD the only issue is its stuck in low, the current owner is willing to let me work on it and sell at the same price if i can fix it, so i pulled the shift motor and turned the switch, nothing moved, tried to engage it into high gear by hand, and i can move it between 2 and 6 oclock, and then it becomes spring loaded, is there a chance im not moving it far enough and it could just be the motor?? or with the range i can move the selector rod should it beable to hit high gear and in which case the tcase is done? please please please help! im very familiar with 4x4 systems and an ase mechanic but no experience on eletronic shift tcases!!thank you !!

also, then current owner pulled front driveshaft, its in low, bbut i can still spin the front output by hand?
 






Ok, I know awd and 4wd are "kinda the same thing" but here they are not.
The 5.0 v8 are the only ones with awd, and do not have a low range. However, you can swap a 4406 transfer case into one and then get true 4wd. You title adds confusion.

The 4.0 does have 4wd with low range from the factory, however it is a 4405 case, and it may make a difference as to which 4.0 engine it is. There are 2, sohc or ohv

I "think" you can remove the shift motor to manual move the shift lever on the transfer case. I also believe the 4wd is actually shifted in using inputs from the abs sensors. Without this input, the front might feel like it is not engaged.
 






well its switch indicates auto/4wdh/4wdl ...as too which 4.0 im unclear, i want to say its the SOHC
 






Which 4.0l doesnt matter. They both use the same T-case. The shift motor on the 44-05 is only used to switch between high and low, 4wd is shifted by an electro-magnet. Thats what the single brown wire going into the back of the case is for.
 






yep its a 4405, i swapped in a pnp one yesterday, now the previous owner had mentioned the 4wd/4wdlow lights flash 6 times every few minutes and its still doing it, and if its not doing that the 4wdlow light stays on? but its in high, also o/d off light flashes, but has overdrive, this vehicle isnt the best pick obviously but its what we could afford, so any one got answers or ideas for these matters at this time? me and my family greatly appreciate this
 






Well one thing would be to get the transmission codes read.
 






If the price is right and you have the time this should be a simple problem to fix. You just need to get the attention of the right person that knows this transfer case (not me). I'm just trying to give you some mental support.

It might be worth the $20 (Elite membership) to post this in the 911 section.

It seems to me that you should be able to manually shift the hi/low range (like you have been trying) and either disconnect or give power to the 4wd/2wd electromagnet. The right person should be able to tell you the correct combination and timing to do this. The "spring load" sounds like you are moveing the shift fork, but the internal gears are not lined up. Try disconnecting the rear driveshaft and turning the rear and front output flanges to see if while you are rotating the hi/low selector you can get things to line up. It may be that you have to have the electromagnet energized/de-energized in order to shift the hi/low. All of this is where a master of the 4405 should be able to help.

yeah you need to turn it past the spring loaded part,use pliers! But if I were you I'd walk away from it,"on a budget" and sploders don"t mix!
 






Bronchole is right, you have to get everything lined up to shift. For instance if you have it on the bench, you can shift with your fingers, and hear the parts move as the range shifts. It does not take a lot of force.
