HELP - crank no start

thought i ran it out of gas, so i put in 5 gallons

but it won't restart

just cranks

checked fuses
swapped relays
tried ether

no luck

any ideas???

why only 5 gallons in ?? pull ur spark plugs yet to see if ur getting fuel ?? do u hear the fuel pump run when u turn the key ??

That should be enough to start it-unless it is facing downhill maybe--

switch the key just to the "on" position. Do you hear a small electric motor near the fuel fill area?
 






i can't remember is there a fuel cutoff switch on the 97's
 






near the passengers feet--up in there

I guess if you are looking for the cutoff, that answers the question you have been asked twice now--

Do you hear the fuel pump running?

In response to your e-mail--
the motor you hear running intermittently is the fuel pump--

now--what we need to do before dropping the tank and replacing it is to verify it isn't a voltage supply problem

when you first switch the key to "on" you should observe 2 things
1) the check engine light should remain lit
2) the fuel pump should prime itself, for 1-2 seconds

If the first isn't happening every time-check the PCM relay and it's connections

if it is just the fuel pump which is intermittent, check the fuel pump relay, and it's socket connections.
As a "jiggle" test, you could leave the key in the on position and jiggle the relays, observing for a clicking when you do this--

You probably do have a fuel pump going south-but it is a good idea to be sure-because they aren't exactly free of charge--

So, after the above checks--you need to check the supply voltage at the fuel pump. With a meter connected, switch the key to on. The voltage should go to 12 v for 1-2 seconds, and then drop to around 6v. It may be a good idea to have a helper for this-so you can keep your eye on the meter--
 






Check the fuel rail to see if you have any fuel pressure when the pump primes. You could have a defective fuel pressure regulator or a clogged fuel filter. The next step would be the ignition system.

In an email to me earlier--he stated he sometimes hears the pump, and sometimes not--when he does hear it it will start--
 






It could be a bad PCM ground wire near the battery. This once happened to my 88. The check engine light didn't come on. I also had this another time, but it was a fusible link. I don't think he has them anymore. It should only have high current fuses under the hood.

cel comes on

I don't appear to have fuel pressure at rail and do not hear the pump

intermitantly after long cranking the theft light comes on but that may be normal

checked all relays and they are clicking - also reswapped around and they are still clicking
 












question - when the PATS kicks in - does it cut off fuel or spark or both?
 






I think it does indeed cut the fuel pump--

My redneck troubleshooting would kick in at this point--
I'd try jumping power directly to the fuel pump -try to make it run.
