Help my 2000 explorer wants to stall when I start it

Our explorer wants to stall when I first start it. Then after it warms up a little it stops. Then it won't do it again unless it has sat for several hours like overnight. We have replaced the MFA sensor didn't work. It only does this when it's really cold out...what's going on?Trying to fix it ourselves. Any help would be greatly appreciated! PS it is a v6 sohc motor.

Welcome To Explorer Forum! Its probably your intake gaskets, which is common if your truck has never had the originals changed.

My 2000 acts strange on start-up if it is very cold. It revs very very low. like in the 400 range and will kill itself. But if i give it one good rev right as I start it, it slaps it into acting right.

When I first encountered the problem, someone told me it could be the IAC valve. Still havent had the extra funds to replace, nor the extra time to break down and clean it. Just something I thought I would throw in here since I encountered it.

how hard is it to change the gaskets yourself?

Update: Mine was doing the same thing pulled out the MAF and the IAC (about a 5 minute deal) purchased some electrical contact cleaner for about $4 at autozone sprayed both chambers of the IAC till they were full and let it sit for about 5 minutes. Dumped it then took an old clean tooth brush and gently brushed out the chambers and repeated the spray and fill. Dump and let sit for about 5 to 10 minutes. Replaced both components and it fired right up and haven't had a problem since.

Did a quick search as mine is doing the same thing. Seems this cold weather is wreaking a lot of havoc on our trucks! Sounds like the IAC valve is sticking. I am going to try this when I get home. I've had this problem in past. Cleaning is a temp fix- you'll have to change eventually. Rockauto.com has them for $50. Just an FYI

yea definitely plan on replacing it eventually. I have to save up to have my upper and lower ball joints replaced as well as my driver side axle and new tires so the temp fix is a ok for right now lol

whew don't you love it? Just an FYI. I did my lower ball joints, upper ball joints (including the arm assembly) and tie rod ends with a full kit I purchased off ebay. Way cheaper than in a parts store. For the lower ball joints, you can rent a press from a parts store for free. Remember to get an alignment once complete!

I was having the same problem when I would start min EX in the mornings to warm it up. I changed my plugs to the E3's this weekend and she fires RIGHT up. I am also going to do the IAC when I get a chance, just to be sure.
