HI,
I have a 1991 "X" with the Factory Amp setup! I have been without a radio in my truck for four months! When I bought the "X" audio only came out of the passenger side speakers, and the original radio had no display, and sounded like crap! So I unistalled it, and put a 1994 AM/FM cassette in from a 94 Limited! Everything lights ups, and it tunes and finds the station. But, NO SOUND! NOTE: You can not even hear the AMP on noise.....that familiar ehite noise you hear when you turn your sterro on with the Audio down low! Anyway, no noticeable carrier or noise comes from the speaker! I also removed the rear panel to check to make sure all the plugs were connected, they were, but the amp did not feel like it was on or hot at all.

Anybody know whats wrong? Yes I have checked and double checked my fuses & Wiring connections. Note: the 94 radio has a little insert that is in the top Amp port above the main 8pin square amp connection. No different results when installed/removed.

Thanks,
Al

maybe your amp is dead. it's a common occurance for the factory amps to lose channels before they totally quit. when i bought my explorer, the right channels were cooked.

Read my comments on a simialr topic titled "96 radio in a 91" started by Ace Fury. The same applies to your situation, not enough voltage to signal the amp to turn-on. The change was made in 1992, so your 1991 amplifier is looking for a 12v "turn-on" signal, and your 1994 radio is only sending it 5V.

You have the shorting plug - if it came with your radio, you need it. You should be able to fire your system up by following the directions I gave in the other post about moving the amp turn-on wire (pin #8)to the power antenna ouput pin (#4) in the wiring harness connector.
