Help selecting new tires

2002 Explorer Sport Trac
I need to get some new tires for my Sport Trac. I have had BFG AT/KO before and they were great. Then I put Goodyear Wrangler MTR's which are on now. Well it is time again for tires, and I am debating if I should get mud terrains again or all terrains? Is there some tires made that are a cross between both? Not quite as aggressive as a mud terrain, but a little more aggressive then an all terrain? Hope this makes sense..

...I have both, the BFG a/t's on my Ranger (had those tires on every truck I've owned since they came out) and I also have the MT/R's on my X...Both are great for their purpose...

..Procomp makes what you are looking for but do not fall for them...Nothing but bad reviews...BFG also has an expensive tire that fit's this criteria but, it is middle of the road and you loose the good aspect of both the tire ranges you have come to rely on...

...I would suggest however, Getting 2 set's of tires...One for daily driving, and another set as throw-on's for wheeling...;)

To answer your question, Chad, there are some tires that are a combination between the two. Just like you need, they are not quite as aggressive as the mud terrains, but a little more aggressive than the all-terrains. They come in two different brands, Michelin and Bridgestone, and there are 3 kinds. Do you have any idea what size you were looking for? Here are the tires

Michelin LTX A/T2

Bridgestone A/T dueler

Bridgestone H/L alenza

If you can get a hold of some Fisk Sport king A/T tires, you'll be set. They are awesome!

You are kidding aren't you? The third tyre is a HT - how is that a cross between and MT and an AT? As for the dueller - it's just an A/T; nothing more or less aggressive about it. And the Michelin looks like it would get stuck in anything other than tarmac.

i have general grabber AT2's they never let me down yet except when someone slashed two of them but thats not the tires fault lol

im getting pro comp xtreme all terrains, because ive found good reviews, what are the bad reviews about??? i dont want to regret getting them!
 












If your looking for an A/T & Mudder hybrid you enter the realms of $200+ tires. Cooper Discover STT's, and Mickey Thompson Baja Claw Radial SLT. I got my unit in the Army to put the Baja Claw's on our Humvee's. They handled great in the snow/mud/ice and finally in the sand.

There was a hill I used to frequent when it was dry out but never had luck on when it had rained as the base of the hill was a swamp with about 12 inches of standing water. This hill was about a 50-60 degree incline and about 40 feet high, when it was dry I would have to hit it going 30mph minimum in 4lo. When we got the Baja Claws installed on my Humvee we decided to try the hill. A brave/stupid friend tried first with the standard off road tires, needless to say we had to use some chain and thick trees to straighten out my Bull Bar because he slid down the hill into me. After we cleared him out of the way I took mine up the hill without a problem at about 10mph. He finally made it up the hill after hitting the base of the hill at 50mph!
After this test we took it to a mud pit that had more than 3 feet of peanut butter thick mud. I know it was atleast 3 feet deep because we had to get a 5 ton to pull one of our Humvees out of it just hours earlier. I hit this going about 20mph and kicked up a ton of mud, but didn't get stuck, even after I feel into the ruts from the earlier mishap.

So if you have the money, go Baha Claws. If not, BFG TA KO.
