I have a 1998 explorer AWD, I have had both axels, 4 ball joints the U joint on the front drive shaft the upper rocker arms and the 3rd member replaced. when I turn right of left there is a loud groaning/grinding sound coming from the left front wheel. Also it always sounds dry, like there is no fluid or greese, when I step on the gas it gets more pronounced, even coasting while turning the left front groans. I have had it to two different shops, one tells me the yoke is bad the other one tells me it is the replaced 3rd member, Both do say all fluids are fine. One shop has made $3414.00 off me in the last few months and now the other one wants $900.00 to replace the already replaced 3rd member. The shop that put the 3rd member in did give me a warrenty but sasys there is nothing wrong with it, Truthfully I am at my wits end since I know nothing about this and all the BS I have heard, I have looked at different sites on parts, problems etc and truthfull getting more confused. will anyone give me some ideas on what to have checked out. Thank You. GPT

Update on HELP, I thought about the brakes because I also had the left hub ass: replaced and now my ABS LIGHT IS ON ALL THE TIME NOT THE BRAKE LIGHT JUST THE ABS. Thank You... GPT

Ok, first on an awd v8 the tires must all be the same size and brand, no mismatches which will cause all sort of issues due to the differential in tire rotation speed.

second, sounds like you got a bad left side hub, if it's replacement caused an abs light to illuminate. ( however, it could be the passenger hub or rear differential sensor also.

What is a 3rd member? Our trucks do not have one. we do not have 9" rear axles--

The most common cause for a grinding noise in the awd system is the front drive shaft cv joint on the transfer case end. You mention the front u joint, but did not mention the front drive shaft cv joint.

The clutch in the awd transfer case is sometimes an issue also.

Try removing the front drive shaft, and take the truck for a drive to see if the noise goes away, but beware the front drive shaft is used for proper park function, the truck may roll, or creep without it so be sure to park on level ground and chock the wheels to prevent roll away.

Let us know what you find. You have spent way too much $$ on this issue.
