I have a 1997 Ranger XLT automatic 4 wheel drive. After putting it into 4 wheel drive I drove, then I put it back into 2 wheel drive when I got home. Then the front end started this grinding noise changed brakes and rotors. The truck now has a loud grinding noise when I make a turn. It seems like the truck is stuck in between 2 wheel and 4 wheel drive. Is that possible and if so how do I fix it? Could it be as simple as flipping the switch back and forth between the two? I really could use the input of anyone who has had this problem or knows how to fix it.

It could be your auto-locking hubs.

I would second the auto hubs. They can make all kinds of noises when they aren't working right. 1st thing would be to clean all the extra grease out of them.

IMHO, the first step would be to rip 'em off and replace them with a set of manuals. They're such a pain that they're not worth the hassle IMHO. Yes, you lose the convenience of the shift on the fly system, but you gain ten-fold in the reliability department.
