Help!!!

I recently got a '96 Explorer V8 AWD. Everything is stock on it and i want to add more power and get better MPG.

Ive bin told to get a better air intake and a set of headers on it and cat back, also switch to synthetic fluids.

What will the synthetic fluids do for me???

Full tune up (plugs, wires, new fluids (t-case, front & rear diff, oil, oil filter, tranny, tranny filter, etc), check condition of tires and inflate all to the proper level (if they are way wrong, this can eat a mpg or 2), new air filter, etc)... May save a few mpg right there

Use "Torque Monster" as a search term in the archives to answer all your header questions for the 5.0.

If you're on a budget, you may cringe. It took me three years to pull the trigger on a set. Believe the hype.

Air intake can be done on a budget (make your own). Upgraded exhaust pricing varies widely. Do your homework (great threads in the archives).

Custom tuning works great too, but you get what you pay for (don't ask about those eBay chips...they're crap).

@ Willzilla im doing a full tune up next week on her. before i buy fluids should i switch to synthetic fluids? and what will they do compared to regular fluids?

@Celly ok thanks ill look around at the other posts. Whats better shorty headers or full length ones? would i just search "homemade intake" or something on here? I was thinking about making my own exaust ive got a welder and oxy-acetylen kit. that is true you doo get what you pay for.

Headers... Everyone says Torque Monster headers are the best, so go for those I have a set of FMS headers that I was given for FREE so those will be going on my car as I have an exhaust leak from my stock manifold, so... It's more of a fix install versus a huge upgrade install for me.

As for fluids... Def switch to synthetic... AMSOIL/Mobile1/RP/etc... Longer lasting and better on your car.

There are approximately 1,587,986 threads in the archives on the synth vs conventional argument (and it is an argument). Best bet is to search rather than starting yet another thread on a tired debate.

-OEM manifolds
-aftermarket OEM replacement manifolds
-FMS "Headers" (and I use the term header loosely because they're just glorified OEM manifolds).
-Torque Monster Headers

Would these be worthwhile in a remote turbo application versus FMS? Or primarily used for the boost in torque for off-roading?

FMS "Headers" are no less restrictive than OEM for the most part. TMH are a completely different story. People use TMH with great results for both on and off road applications.

There are the only option that give performance gains over stock. Dyno proven.

I was going to suggest that. You might be a couple hundred for them. Get yourself an Elite membership so you can sell on this site and post em up. You might be surprised. For whatever reason, there still seems to be some kind of demand for the FMS.

Yeah, TMH aren't cheap but you get what you pay for, IMHO.

You can always keep an eye out for a used set of TMH but they don't come up often. They never last long and are usually sold at a pretty high % of new price.
