1999 Explorer XLT 5.0
Here's my '99 5.0 XLT. It's a 2WD with about 113,000 true miles. It's a rust free original that's a pleasure to work on. It's my DD and has never let me down. I've worked through most of the problems and things that I didn't like. The paint is fine from a distance but the roof clear coat is pretty bad. The interior and leather upholstery cleaned up very nice except for the driver's seat so I spent some dough on nice Wet Okole seat covers.
All the normal wear items (brakes, shocks, alternator, radiator, plugs, wires, etc) have been replaced. It's ready for ball joints and a rear trans seal.

There's a few weird things it does that annoy the hell out of me. At speeds under 10 or 15 mph, especially when it's been sitting for a while and only when turning, there's a faint rubbing in the rear end. To me it sounds like the clutches for the limited slip are chattering. Going straight it's dead quiet. I've replaced the rear diff fluid and friction modifier, then I drove her real hard doing donuts and figure 8's trying to break it free. It had no effect. I figured since this thing obviously sat for a while maybe that was it. I'll probably have a good shop nearby try to find the problem or rebuild the diff.

The other weird thing is it has a strange howl like sound coming from either the intake manifold or intake pipe. It happens after it's got good and warm, been driving for a while. It doesn't do it all the time.

I never have been able to get the OD button to work either. Tried all the common fixes from a new switch to tear down thee steering column looking for a frayed wire. No luck. Oh well.

It's been a great little truck the last year.

The rear end noise
Could it be the e brake rubbing inside the rotors? You can try matching down the e brake pedal a few
Times and release it… get
Moving in reverse a few miles an hour and mash it down… it should self adjust and if that is the source of your noise it will be obvious. It could also be a wheel bearing. A wheel bearing noise will change tone as you go from Driving straight to giving it a side to side load. With the window down you may be able to tell and hear it change?

The growling noise from
Intake, make sure your pcv valve is seated
Although that usually results in a high idle and a sucking noise

Airbox is nice and tight? This is a new one on me… would love to hear it

The od cancel Light is a pretty simple circuit we should be able to fix that bugger. Is the
Bulb Out? Does it actually cancel overdrive when you are cruising and hit the switch any noticeable difference? The switch can be tested with a multimeter… and the wires from steering column to the pcm also simple continuity test to the pcm connector

99 5.0 W 115k I am in love!! Post up some
Pics!! These trucks really are Amazing should Last you a good long time

The clear coat can also be fixed… with some Elbow grease..
Vice grip garage sells a brush on clear coat you could apply after sanding down the bad oem spots
