I want to make my '99 5.0 Explorer sound like a 5.0 Mustang.

BTW, now im thinking of making my own custom Borla X-pipe setup with their "S" style mufflers. Its going to be like borla's '05-'06 Mustang bolt-on kit, which sounds freakin awesome (my buddy has that kit on his '05 GT). Going to be expensive though.

I just talked to my buddy with the 05' Mustang GT and he wants to see it we can somehow fit his old stock exhaust onto my Explorer. Does anyone have any tips on this? Could it work??? We tryin it tomorrow night or this saturday.

it will not work silly they are completely different underneath.

I just got back from the exhaust shop this AM with my new to me 96 5.0L Explorer.

Let me tell you it sounds *****IN.
Why?
Lets break it down.
First you must know I have a 5.0L Bronco II with a VERY similar exhaust setup under it as I just had built and it does NOT sound this mean.

Bronco:
5.0L GT-40 P, stockish engine with KKM intake (open element)
Torque Monster Headers
Explorer down pipes with cat converters and 02 sensors
duel inlet single outlet flo pro muffler
single 3" pipe out the back

It sounds great, but not as great as this one:

Explorer
KKM Intake
96 Explorer 5.0L, non P heads
Torque Monster headers
Explorer down pipes with cats and 02 sensors
FloPro dual inlet (2.5") single outlet (3") muffler
2.5" pipe over the rear axle and out the side

The Explorer sounds TWICE as mean, even with the 2.5" pipe instead of the 3"
Why?

E-303 camshaft and 1.6 roller rockers.

It straight up MOVES and it has a lopey idle like that of a Mustang, the cam and rollers must be responsible forthe noise difference, FINALLY I have that Mustang 5.0L sound, and its only a single 2.5" exhaust pipe :) hehehe

Lets get some freakin exhaust clips man....i have to hear that thing...and don't be like them guys that say they'll get exhaust clips and never do. Im going to get that mustang exhaust on my X....u just wait and see....i only need a way to secure the muffler underneath. Does my stock exhaust system completely unbolt from underneath...hangers and all? Or is there cutting involved?

cutting makes it 10 times easier to get out....

ok but im going to do all i can to take it out without cuttin....and about them exhaust sound clips....don't be a mexican't - be a mexican

OK. i removed the rear exhaust hangar - took 5 mins. I removed the muffler hanger - took an hour and a half...nearly impossible to do. I removed the left exhaust clamp and the right - took 30 mins. Now for the LAST 3 HOURS i have been trying to pull this mother effin cat-back portion out from the mother effin bottom of the X. I have now cut two sections of the exhaust tip off and still it will not come. I need to put it on an auto lift to get it off. Also i cranked it up with no mufflers and it didn't even sound that good....Alot louder than i expected. I am now riding around with one exhaust clamp and no hangers past the cats. Im hoping it will hold till next weekend when im takin that ***** to a muffler shop. AHHHHHH!!! IM PISSED!

cut that s#*t!!!

I am in the process of putting on tqm headers and am looking for a good exhaust to compliment it, i have my eyes on the dynomax system just because i like the turbo style muffler sound, has anyone tried this system out? also i was wondering if you remove the cats right in front of the muffler will it still pass emissions testing?

check with your emissions requirements.
I doubt they are required.
The primary cat converters are in the down pipes as you likely know, so the secondary cats (large ones) can usually be removed without effecting emissions.

I don't understand why everyone wants to buy an exhaust kit, especially when you are considering removing some stock components, which will make your kit no longer bolt up.
I vote for taking it to a performance exhaust shop or two and getting estimates, usually you can get a nice setup for far cheaper then a kit + shipping....

The problem is now that i was planning on taking the X to a muffler shop this weekend and having them weld on the two mustang mufflers that i have. Now i just talked to my buddy who owns the mustang mufflers and he says he doesn't want them to be welded on because he wants to be able to take them off my X if he ever needs them (I don't know why?). Can a muffler shop install a muffler without welding? The Mustang pipe is a 1/4in bigger than my X's pipe so it will slide over it...but the only thing is exhaust leaks. ANY IDEAS?

making the mufflers bolt in/out = $$$$ yes they can do it easily but the cost of your exhaust just went up ALOT
The pipe sizing is not an issue, it should be welded at the union. any shop can do 2-1/4" to whatever size adapter is needed.

I think im just going to save up for my borlas($157 x 2 = $314 + installation)

to make the sound identical takes a lot of changes.
the things that affect sound most other than the muffler and headers are the lengths and diameters of the piping u use.
a longer, larger pipe will get u a deeper tone.
a short skinny pipe will make it high pitched, thats wat makes tin-can ricers sound like vacuums.

any headers will do, a flowmaster super 40 will give u the grunt, and that combined with an x-pipe and using DUAL 2.5" pipes will give the the perfect balance

any headers will do?
There is only one brand of headers that will fit the 5.0L in the Explorer, aside from the FMS manifolds which are only a slight step above the factory manifolds....the Torque Monster headers...and then of course there is always custom...

I basically have the same setup as EXPO5.0 on the first page.

I have a dual inlet 2.5" dual out 2.5" internal x inside Magnaflow muffler with dual exhaust and spare removed.(My girlfriend and my moms BF have '00 Mounty's so I can call them and use there spare tires)

I love the sound of it but need to fix my right side manifold leak. I want Torque Monster headers but they are soooo expensive. I will prob break down and get them anyways.

It doesnt sound like my '02 Mustang GT, but only because my mustang has a no cats x-pipe with Magnaflow Magnapack catback and a modded engine. So loud and sooo sick.

Im gonna try to take sound clips of both and post them.

i'm too lazy to go back and look- but i dont' think i still have that set-up

now my truck sounds like a 1971 mustang

..............mine sounds like a Cessna Mustang ;)
