I want to make my '99 5.0 Explorer sound like a 5.0 Mustang.

So you want it to sound like my BII then? hehehe

My BII has a single 3" exhaust, but man you can definatley tell its a 5.0L Ford.

I have: KKM intake with cold air feed, TM headers into the primary cat converters, no secondary cat converters (these really quiet down the Expo), a dual inlet single 3" outlet Flow pro muffler and a 3" pipe going straight out the back.
It sounds pretty damn good, I get compliments on it all the time.

I will be setting up my 96 Explorer the same way, except that truck will have a E cam and intake spacer, so it should be even better.

Where are you going to get the intake spacer? I am interested, but weary of buing one off of ebay.

Yea, that sounds alot better than the in car sound. That sounds really good too. What all do you have done exhaust wise?

I just replaced my stock muffler with a y-pipe(it goes on backwards) and put a 3.5" tip on. Cost like $40 TOTAL.

I Don't Have A Sound Clip But I Think My 96 5.o Sounds Pretty Good. I Have A 50 Series Dual In Dual Out Muffler.... Custom Bent Dual Exhaust... Ford Motorsport Headers, Mac Air Intake And Superchips Program. It Does Not Sound Quite Like A Mustang (i Still Have Cats On) But I Do Get The Neighbor's Attention.

The 347 Sounds Awsome....

When you say you replaced your stock muffler with a y-pipe, do you mean that you did away with a muffler all together?

I got my 1" intake spacer from Ford Racing, I figured 15+ HP for under $100 isn't bad, there are reviews on the Ebay spacer on this forum, a few members are running it.

I prefer Ford parts when they are cheap enough to afford!

yes, the muffler is absent. The stock resonator is still there though-that is why it isnt too loud. The resonator is the glasspack looking thing after the muffler.

Well it does sound good. Back to the subject...what is it about a 5.0 mustang or any mustang for that matter, that makes it sound like a mustang? And no matter what exhaust you put on it, it will still sound like a mustang. Yet when you put exhaust on a 5.0 Explorer, it sounds more like a truck (i know this kinda sounds retarded), yet has the same engine as the mustang. Where, in my engine and exhaust, is it different than a 5.0 mustang?
Thanks,
-Colton

the ex has 4 cats, then the pipes come together into a single exhaust through the muffler then into the resonator.

All these things quiet it down ALOT.

But even if you remove the exhaust completely, such as in this clip Click here to see Video , its still sounds like a truck and a lot less like a mustang. I've heard a 5.0 mustang without exhaust and it still has that mustang sound. There must be something going on inside the engine to cause this.

length of pipes? weight of vehicle as it accelerates (rate of accel) the dopplar effect?

Different cam ;)
see the top end on the explorer and the bottom end from a 5.0 mustang can make for a nice cobra engine :D

410 can correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the 5.0 Stang had the HO block using a hydraulic roller camshaft where as the Ex has the standard flat tappet....or something like that, but the cam does make the engine's sound different

Not a fantastic vid but...

Just sitting in the driveway but I dont have the explorer any more so I can't redo the vids.

True duals from the first set of cats back, a magnaflow H pipe and dual Flowmaster 40's non-delta, dumped out under the spare tire well. It sounded very similar to my friends 95' GT

yes they have different cam profiles, the GT-40 is a full roller block

Would a 5.0 Mustang cam fit in my 5.0 Explorer engine? And if so, where can i buy one? I wonder if it would change the performance. Right now im looking for an online engine diagram (a free one) for a 99 Explorer 5.0 and and ''89-'95 Mustang 5.0, to compare the difference in engine parts.
I dream to own a mustang, yet i dream more of my explorer sounding like a mustang.

Why swap in an HO cam when you could just step it up a bit and get a custom ground Comp Cam... It would likely cost about the same.

Would that add horsepower, and most importantly, make it sound more like a mustang?
