I want to make my '99 5.0 Explorer sound like a 5.0 Mustang.

OK, today the mechanic at work said that the mustang's sound is achieved by the specialized bends in the exhaust system, or something like that. He did say that the resonators play a part but he told me my best bet would be to go to a local muffler shop and tell them what i want; they could most likely satisfy me. He also suggested i call Summit Racing and talk to one of their guys about what i want and they will know what i need. Any thoughts from you guys on any of this?
Thanks,

If you go no cats ,, h or x pipe, true duals(2.25" pipe) and old-school 2 chamber flowmasters you will sound as close to a Mustang as a stock cammed Ex is going to get. You arent going to sound like that particular mustang though.

Where can i buy old-school 2 chamber flowmasters? Are they in the flowmaster series (40-70)?

Flowmaster 40 series non-delta flow. They are hard to find now. The current 40 series will be about the same sound just a little quieter...they give you the sound, but dont rattle the change in your cupholder like the original:)

This is a Dakota with 40s, sounds like a Mustang to me. http://www.geocities.com/dakota2005v8/Flowmastersound.MPG

I don't think I wanna go that loud ,so i may just go with the 50 series. If I were to go with magnaflow instead, which muffler would be a good choice? Mustangs run a true dual set-up so would i be skipping a step by just doing one muffler (dual in, dual out)?

Then I would for sure try a 70 flowie or a magnaflow
My truck is LOUD, I need a good sub and amp just to make sense of music when cruising on highway. Like I said it drones at 2000-2200 rpms which just so happens to be the 70 mph engine speed.
On trips, it's like the girlfriend that won't shut up.Y'know, good in bed but now you want her gone! lol ( yes I've said it before)
At first it was cool, but it doesn't go away. Ever
Turn your sound up all the way, you'll get just a taste. really
My desktop computer is hooked to a Home theatre system with Polk speakers and 110 w per channel of JVC power, Onkyo 200Wsub amp with Velodyne sub. The exhaust video played on it sounds "almost" lifelike.
You have to take into consideration the camera-microphone used, and the limitations of your computers sound, before you make a decision to buy

Well like i said before, i love the sound of your explorer, and so far, it's the best ive heard yet. Are running magnaflow or flowmaster? And also, with your engine being 347ci. does that effect the way it sounds?

I have a 50 flowie, had it before my mods.
It was loud then, and yes louder now.
My wife's friends make fun of her when she drives it
That is a good thing!

btw my explorer is a mountaineer
but who's counting?

Sorry, i knew it was a mountaineer. The reason why i was asking about magnaflow is because my mother used to have an '01 Mustang GT and we put magnaflow mufflers on it and i really liked the sound. I DON'T want to have that "signature flowmaster sound" (say it in a deep voice as in the commercial, lol), its just way too over hyped and there are so many other exhausts that sound alot better. I don't know how to describe a breed of exhaust note but if i were to describe what im looking for, it would be somewhere along the lines of "exotic" and when i think 'exotic', i think Bassani, but i could be wrong. What muffler do you guys think i should go with, besides flowmaster?
Thanks,
-Colton

How about Mac? They sound amazing on Mustangs, and they make a kit for your truck. It would sound even better if you cut off the secondary cats. This kit is $250.

here is a link to some universals... http://dallasmustang.com/prod/8920

why buy an exhaust kit if you are going to remove the cat converters? Just get the muffler you want, plan out the routing and sizes, then have a local shop install it for you.

Yea, i don't really like the exhaust kits that are made for the 5.0 explorer, they're all 'single exit' and im looking for a dual set up. Is there any exhaust kit for my explorer that has a 'dual exit' set up? Right now i just need to pick my muffler and tell the exhaust shop that i want it to sound like a 5.0 mustang and that i want dual tips. Should i do a 'true dual' set-up with two mufflers, or do a 'dual in, dual out' with a single muffler? Which would get me closer to the mustang sound?

You do realize you are going to have to remove your spare tire to get duals out each side, right?

Ok, when you just said that i had to go outside and crawl underneath my explorer (in the dark) and see what you were talking about. I got my digital camera and took some pictures also for future knowledge of my stock exhaust system too. Well, i looked at it and it seems that you could run the other secondary pipe in the same path that the stock pipe follows. The pipe follows the top of the body then drops down at the back, right below the frame rail, but a good bit above the leaf spring and then exits out the back. Does the gas tank get in the way of a second pipe? I know the whole exhaust system runs down the right part of the underbody and the left part is mostly the gas tank. Is it too hard to cross the pipe over before the rear axle because of the drive shaft? Is that why you must go through the space where the spare is? (Who needs that recalled Firestone Wilderness AT tire anyways though??)

I am now to the point to where i want to design my exhaust set-up. Does anyone know where i can find a picture of a '99 Explorer 5.0 stock exhaust set up (like a picture taken from underneath). I just can't get a good enough idea by crawling underneath, nor can i get any decent pictures.

you don't have to remove it, you can choose to wait around until you need it and find it melted.

i know this from experience

no you don't

How about this...start by removing the spare tire 'for good' to allow maximum space underneath, remove the stock exhaust system from the muffler back (cats and all), weld a criss-crossed (x shaped) pipe to the remaining pipe and have the pipes extend to opposite sides underneath the explorer (to create an x-pipe), then weld (or clamp) on a magnaflow muffler or flowmaster 40 series muffler to the ends of each pipe, weld on pipes and extend them towards the bumber and finally add 3 inch tips underneath the bumber. COMPLETE!. - Would this get me somewhere in the realm of sounding like a 5.0 mustang? Would this conceivably work as an exhaust set-up? Which muffler should i go with (magnaflow or flowmaster)?
Thanks,
-Colton

I ran across this thread while trying to find information on the KKM intake. I really wish I could get a sound clip of my X for you.

I think I might just back it up close to the computer room window and record with the computer's mic tomorrow, lol.

My current setup is:

factory headers
2-1/2" pipe to the first 2 cats
2-1/2" pipe from the first 2 cats to the second 2 cats
2-1/2" pipe from the second 2 cats into 2 18" glasspacks
2-1/2" pipe from the glasspacks to the back with 3" chrome tips

I'm thinking of removing 2 of the cats... also think I might order the KKM intake. As a matter of fact, I think I'll start a thread asking for advice...lol.
