You don't have to "mash" the gas. Just starting to accelerate will disengage the e-brake.

No actually the new E-brakes automatically release when you put the vehicle in drive or reverse and press the gas. Never have to remember to release on the newer vehicles. My 2013 MKZ also automatically released in drive but you had to be wearing your seatbelt for that.

What I don't like about this (fortunately mine isnt upgraded) is that when we back out of the garage, we NEVER ever touch the gas to back up. So now we have to push on the gas to release it when we slowly back out of our garage.

You literally have to tap it lightly to disengage the E-brake. Same for the auto start/stop when you're using auto-hold, which I do. Tap the throttle once to start the engine, then tap it a second time to disengage the auto-hold to roll forward.

the recall from Ford to address this issue reprograms all prior models to the parking brake engaging when you go from D to P. I think this is across all 20+ Explorers

Shouldn't have to on an automatic transmission. Never had to in my almost 30 years of driving and don't want to now.

This is a program from Ford as a bandaid fix. No other automatics on the market that I know of auto set the E-brake, (hence the name Emergency).

Good luck getting a reply, I have been asking about the recall on my 2021 and the software update that puts your Exp in Park automatically while in Park, I cant seem to get an answer from anyone who had the upgrade if you need to manually release the Parking brake each time.

Hi Mark. If the update doesn't change the way the parking brake works you simply have to put the vehicle in gear and start driving. The brake should automatically release. Have you tried this and does it release?

Actually, the E-brake refers to Electric Parking Brake. The only reference in the manual to Emergency Brake is in talking about Emergency Brake Assist which is a different item.

Yes all Explorer have been reprogrammed based on most recent recall issue . It effects most 2021 and 2022. I just had my programmed by recall to do the same thing .

Most of your friends probably have not had the recall done. It will auto engage emergency parking break but should release upon hitting the button or out of park.

I just had mine done on my 2021 limited hybrid

I just had the update . Confirmed call your local dealership and they will give you the campaign number . Yes I can confirm that is not an issue but is supposed to happen .

Why would you want to disable the feature? The dealership won't help you even if they could as this is something that Ford has put out in part as a safety feature. Because of possible liability issues, no dealer will disable it.

When ever mine is engaged I just hit the gas pedal and it releases it and let's you drive away.

That is the way it is supposed to work but members are wondering if it still works that way after the update.
