Hidden Push Button Start

Im not sure if I am posting this in the right section but i wanted to share something i installed before i sell my truck. I installed a hidden push button start into my coin holder in my 96 eddie bauer if anyone has any questions about how to do this yourself i can tell you what you need and make up a walkthrough about how to do it yourself. here are some pics

right now i have it set up so that you turn the key to the run position and then flip one of the switches to turn on the push button start then you push down the nickel coin slot witch still functions and can hold a couple coins.

here is the pick of the back of the push button to give you an idea of where it is and how i put it in

here is where i put my switches on the metal bar that is behind the kleenex holder which i actually had to cut part of it out so that i could put them there

SORRY bout the images i havent quite figured out yet how to put them in there correctly if you right click on them and say open image in new tab you should be able to see them im goin to keep trying to figure out how to get them in here properly though.

You can't direct link (in an [img ] tag) a dropbox image. It's not an image sharing host. Flickr, 500px, imgur etc will work though.

the reason why i did this was more for security purposes because cars get stolen here in the twin cities all the time and I also did this when i got bored one day, you push down the nickel slot of the coin holder after you flip a switch on that cuts the power to the push button switch to turn the vehicle on. and for this to work you either have to turn the key to the on position and have 12 volts be wired to the toggle switch then from the toggle switch to the push button and then to the red wire with a light blue stripe that goes to your starter relay. the other way you can also make this work is if you wire in more switches two turn on the other accessory power and run which i can also explain how to do in detail if anyone would like to know. i will be posting up a how to on the install i shown above shortly

Here is my walkthrough of how to install this push button start into the coin holder. this walkthrough probably isnt the best because i cant start from scratch and show you step by step but i will try my best to explain each step as thoroughly as possible.

What is needed
1.soldering iron
2.rosin core solder
3.10-12 gage wire
4.10 amp or more push button switch (make sure that springs mentioned below will fit onto the end of the switch that is being pushed down)
5.10 amp or more toggle switch
6.10 amp inline fuse

The first step is to take out the coin holder that is attached to the kleenex holder in my truck. then you have to remove the 4 screws that attach the two together which are t10 torx screws.

after you take it apart you take the middle spring out and drill or use a dremel (which i recomend but is more difficult to make right size hole) to make a hole big enough to fit your push button switch in right in the center of where the spring was,(make sure that it is a tight fit.

Then you have to make a hole using the same methods mentioned above into the kleenex holder( this hole does not have to be as tight of a fit ) and attach the two together (there are two dimples that stick out of the coin holder to hold it in place to the kleenex holder) then tighten the push button switch down if you want you can use washers on the outside to make the switch sit lower so that you can put more coins into the coin holder without pushing it down.

now put the springs back in and put the one on the end of the push button switch (like shown above) and carefully put the top of the coinholder on i recommend putting the screw in that doesnt actually screw through the kleenex holder first then put the others in it just seemed to be easier that way.( when you do this make sure everything is lined up before you tighten the screws )

Thats how I installed the switch into the coinholder i will post up another post explaining how to wire it up to your starter and to the switch i mentioned. if you have any questions ask away and i will answer them as soon as i can.

(THIS METHOD WILL NOT ALLOW YOU TO USE THE KEY TO START UP THE VEHICLE YOU WILL HAVE TO PUT IT ON RUN THEN FLIP THE TOGGLE SWITCH TO THE ON POSITION AND THEN PUSH THE PUSH BUTTON START TO START IT UP)
Now for the fun part all of the wiring. I dont have pictures at this time to help with the walkthrough but if you need them i could probably come up with some. if you are familiar with where your ignition switch is located under the driverside dash on the bottom of the steering column in the 2nd gen explorers, you need the red wire with a light blue stripe wich is the wire i used on my 96.
1. you need to remove your ignition switch under the driverside dash

2. cut the red wire with the light blue stripe and solder a wire onto the end that DOES NOT lead to the ignition switch ( which needs to be a decent length due to having to go through the dash and down into the center counsole )you could also relocate the wire so that it is harder to find if you would like.

3.Now you need to remove everything in front of your center console between the dash so that you can run the wire underneath to the kleenex holder (if you have any questions on this let me know)

4.now you have to run a wire directly from your battery to your center counsole with a inline 10 or 15 amp fuse soldered into it that wire then gets attached to a toggle switch wich you can put any place that you would like in that wire(the picture at the top shows where I put mine) the switch turns off power to that wire so cut the wire and attach crimp on end then put it on the positive on the toggle switch.

5.after you put the kleenex holder back in place run a wire from the negative on the switch to one end of the push button switch and attach the wire that is coming from the red wire with a light blue stripe to the other end of the toggle switch now you have a hidden push button switch to start your truck.
