High Flow Air Filter

Has anyone had experience with high flow air filters with the 4.6 V8? does it really have any impact on HP or gas mileage?

Put a K&N in my 2002 4.6, not sure what the dyno might/might not show, but it seemed to slightly increase throttle response, by seat of the pants. No difference detected in gas mileage.

Buy an Amsoil EA filter if they make one for you, those are very good. They clean the air far better than the oiled filters, and they flow equally well. They are also cleanable, and without oiling there is no chance of fouling the MAF sensor. Good luck,

I've got a K&N in my 4.0, and it works well. Added a pleasant little "honk" to the otherwise stock airbox when you're really getting on the throttle.

Maybe a couple ponies extra right at the very top of the powerband, but MPG seems about the same.

The K & N filters are usually oiled which might cause the MAF sensor to get filty faster. That oil sticks to those sensitive parts, and collects small particles.

I agree. Though I don't have a K&N in my mounty, I have used them in the past. And if properly cleaned, dried and oiled you shouldn't have any excess oil to get in your MAF.

The oiling problems are just recent in the last few years. Back when K&N started there was very little oil on them. I've bought four of them, they all worked well, when new and after I cleaned and re-oiled them.

I will not use one again, I learned last year about their poorer air filtering abilities. I want the incoming air to be as clean as possible, that is not going to happen with an oiled air filter. Good luck,

Prior to switching to an Amsoil EAA filter I used K&N and have never seen any issues; backed by UOA data.

Talk is cheap, data is the answer.

K&N filters are top notch. I only switched to Amsoil oilless filters because I hate cleaning and oiling filters.

In my experience as a professional auto tech, I have seen more harm than good from using an oiled filter. I do not and will not recommend them, too much grit gets past them, regardless of what the manufacturer states.

If you have ever seen a powerstroke turbo after using one, you would know exactly what I mean. There are still many who believe they provide more power or other claims. I don't think the tradeoff is worth the expense or possible damage.

Haven't used the Amsoil, but it sounds like a good alternative.

There are more than two internet sources for air filter testing data, I read more than one thread referring to them last Fall. It's known data, just look for it. Until something changes, the oiled filters are lesser filters. When/if something changes, they absolutely will blow their own horns. Till then,

The particles that a oiled cotton filter allows past it aren't large enough to do any damage to the engine's internals. Though I still see the point of why let any particles thru. I dunno...I'm on the fence about them. They have their advantages and disadvantages, just like a paper, foam, or synthetic fibre media does just the same.

These Amsoil eA filters do have my attention though. I'd just like to see some more data on them about flow vs. filtering ability than their website seems to offer. A head-to-head-to-head with an Amsoil eA vs. a K&N vs. a popular paper filter for the same application would be great to look at.

Hey guys, thanx a lot to everyone for their replies, i din not seem to find a lot of info on these filters, since here in my country they´re not as widely used as in the US.
I guess i will keep on reading your valuable posts and make a decition.
