92 XLT w/ 169k
I bought the car with 160k on it. Has been absolutely perfect except for a replaced battery terminal (cracked almost all the way through Also, I had to replace both auto locking hubs which ran me about $900. Awesome truck, would never part with it.
Great site, Thanks a lot to everyone for the info.

miles...

I have a '92 XLT with 121,000 miles. So far, the following has "happened"

-AC compressor went out ast 100,000 miles (not replaced, no need).
-Rear passenger side window went off track.
-Some of the window controls don't work in the back, but they do from up front. Just ask the driver, please.
-Replaced front, pass. side rotor (my fault)
-My trans failed at 121,000 miles (just last week).
-Lots of speeding tickets
-One good lawyer.

Nothing else. I'm getting new shocks, maybe a 1" lift, maybe new exhaust, and the front seat broke after I bought it. I'm a big weightlifter type dude and one time I accelerated and I went back with the seat. I prop it upo with a dry cleaning hang bar between the front and back seats.

I bought it used at 80,000 niles a few years ago. I only go off road 1-3 times/yr.

The only thing I can't stand is the shaking at 55-60 mph. I understand its a design flaw. The fix is expensive. So, you want fries with that?

Im brand new to this page,
91 XLT 4X4
105,000 miles
I've had to replace all of the brakes. Front calipers pads and brake lines as well as all of the rear. I lost all brakes on the highway doing about 50 mph and almost rolled, got it off the highway with nothing more than soiled underwear.

All new shocks

Also had the front 3 ujoints replaced.Still have a slight "rattle" sound at low speed like in a parking lot, any hints as to that.

Not bad for being 3rd owner and having it a little over a year before doing anything to it.

Welcome to all newbies..just bumping this up for more people to see.
Thanks for all the posts!

Bump

ive posted earlier on this thread but that was like 30k ago. im now up to 303,000 miles with the original engine and tranny. ive replaced most everything except for the drivetrain(radiator, a/c compressor, altenator, ect) i just change the oil every 3k and do a full tranny service every 20k

i have two explorers. my first is a 1993 xlt dark green with the 4.0. I had 123000 miles on it. I replaced, ball joints, the brakes three times, tires three times, shocks, two tune ups.. i dont remember braking anything else.

my other explorer is a 98xlt V8. the 5.0 liter engine has been better than the six cylineder. ive got 76000 miles on it and have had to replace the brakes once, tune up, tires twice, i broke my front driveshaft, blew my transmission cooler lines, and had to have a crack sealed on the block. otherwise this one has been awesome. i think its much better than the 4.0 or the 4.6 for that matter.

Bumping up for new people

1992 XLT 4 wheel drive 185,000miles

What we replaced becuase we needed to (other than tune up stuff):

Tranny rebuild @ 165,000 miles
Radius Arm bushings
O2 sensor
Brake calipers and rotors (do the rotors every 2 times I change the pads)
replaced A/C lines (were leaking slightly)

What we replaced becuase we wanted to:
Added 2.5" lift
Added 8.5" shackles
Rs9000 shocks
Gears (3.27 to 4.10)
Detroit Locker in rear
Warn manual hubs

What we are about to change:
Alternator... its making noise when cold.

Other than radius arm bushing problem which were solved by the Lift (it moves the
bushing away from the Cat) we have not had any chronic problems.

At 225,000 we lost the water pump.. I changed the Raidator too (it has a 5" long crack in it)..

At 234,000 miles we lost the 2nd tranny.. We found out that the overheating we did to the motor killed the tranny. We killed the Bands, Clutches, Trust Washers, OD gear.. broke 4 springs in the OD gear.. blackened the torque converter and melted some hard parts at the front of the tranny.. ($1708 total damage)..

Roll over

From BUCHVILLEMAN list, it look more like he had a rollover situation....j/k With all those bend thing and smashed parts I tought...
Mine is du for some major parts exchange, normal wear, but all at once, will post the update when done.

i do a lot of wheeling. most of the bent parts were from racing on the beach and just over working the suspension with inadequate parts. i really do consider my baby to be in prime condition. i used to be a youth leader when i was in college and i hauled more kids than i should have all of the time. i actually got some of my guys into wheeling. 2 of them bought trucks when they graduated high school and we worked on their trucks together. my jeremy got a 84 silverado and we put a 6" lift 35" bfg mud 600cfm edlebrock and peformer cam and heads on a 350. man what a truck. we would go wheeling after church almost every sunday.
last week i got my butt stuck in a coyote cave. i went head first down and bottomed out onthe fram. the front was resting onthe bumper and the rear bumper was 4' feet in the air. the plastic rocker panels were torn off. luckily the went back on with some nuts and bolts. you can say that i go rough, but i have had so much fun and learned so much with my explorer. people are amazed at what i can go through and over with my truck and it still makes it to work and church and i can take clients out to lunch or whatever. in fact it usually a good convo piece. it doesnt look like a redneck mobile but a mild mannered offroad machine with a big attitude.
