And what should we give Tom for having the 100th post? An all expense paid trip to Oakland, CA? ;) Maybe someone could build him some long poles to attach to the sides of his Explorer, THEN he could keep it on its wheels! :D

training wheels?

I don't need no stinkin training wheels!

284,401 MILES
AND STILL RUNNING STRONG!!!
still the original tranny and engine(never rebuilt)

replaced items:
radiator
water pump
condensor
a/c compressor (4x, that's been gettin expensive!)

Congrats tdavis! Your the 100th post! Now lets try for 200! LOL

1992 EB with 168K

3 AOD transmissions!
1 center console arm rest support
believe it or not everything else it fine

Now Tom, don't think of them as training wheels, we'll call it the "Explorer Directional Stability Insurer" I think If I had thought a while I could have come up with something better than that  Oh well.

Keep the posts coming guys, this is great stuff ;)

84,210 miles

1. Tranny broke down no reverse. At first it was making noise when slowing down. Thanks God for the extended warranty. It is now in the shop.
2. Brake front and rear replaced
3. Firestone tire replaced after 60 k miles.

Just updating everything on my truck in here:
83,488
-Just had new brakes all around
-New coolant and T-stat
-New window motor in rear driver's side door
-needs ball joint and Trans sometimes acts up in reverse (once about every 5,000 miles)
good luck to all and lets keep this thread growing!

Hey just bumping this up again! LOL

1993 Eddie Bauer 4x4 4-door
77,310.2 miles

The only thing I've replaced--other than the normal tune-up stuff--is the 4x4 transfer case. It up and went on me @ ~63,000 miles. To make matters worse, I was stuck in my backyard--very embarrasing. Had to get the neighbor with the winch to pull me out.

That does sound embarrasing, but mine always acts up when I drive my neighbor around..it embarrases me that the headlights act up the the transmission acts up when backing out of his driveway! He thinks my truck is a piece of crap now and the problems seem to only happen when he's with me! I wish I didn't have ANY problems! :-)

93 Explorer XL, 4Dr, 4WD
108,000 miles

Other than needing an A/C line replaced,no breakdowns. This thing will not quit running. Just typical maintainence. Never eeeeeeeeever has my Explorer left me standed. Still runs like new.

Just adding some stuff I had done at 84,000 miles:
-upper passanger side ball joint (worn)
-lower driver's side ball jont (torn boot)
-turn signal stalk (Switch shorting out)
-Rear driver's side window motor
-1 backlight for cruise control (Those are $$$$!)
-new brakes all around with disks and pads
-new parking brake pads (not a fun job)

I saw a few people had to replace ball jonts, but at only 84,000 I would expect them to still be good?!

Please post what you've had to do too!

Bought my 91 XLT with 120K and I can tell the previous owner did not take very good care of it. I now have 124,388 and this is what I have replaced:

Low and high pressure power steering lines
new radiator
repack wheel bearings
New upper and lower ball joints
sway bar frame bushings
camber bushings
fuel filter
fuel pressure regulator
spark plugs
air filter
battery
tires
pre-built trans.
spark plug wires

Things left to do:
get differentials and transfer case serviced
check u-joints

Wow! No wonder my credit card balance is so high. You never realize how much stuff you've done until you list it.

Thermostat & Heater Valve

I'm not sure if the name is correct, but Winter 1999/2000 @ 70,000 miles the Heater Valve exploded and the Thermostat freaked out at the same time. $250.00 Parts and Labor. Nothing else.

2wd, man.tran., Sport 79,400 miles.

Just bumping this up for our newer members.

my turn...

'94 xlt 130K miles:
front rotors,
front speed sensors,
starter, battery, shocks,
and the a/c blows hot air, but i havent gotten around to getting it fixed!

'94 XLT bought in June 98 with 35,000 on it. I now have about 78,000 miles on it. Since I have owned it I have replaced the....

-air filter with K&N
-oil & filter every 3,000 to 3,500 miles
-rear brake shoes
-front pads (every year, about 15,000 to 20,000 miles, I have a lead foot)
-plugs and wires
-front bearings, spindle arm, and rotors. (this was done under warranty after driving 150 miles in 4x4 during a blizzard, I never got stuck though. The next day I had to drive another 250 miles (not in 4x4) but after getting off the highway the front left wheel wouldn't turn. The bearings had seized in that wheel and fused to the spindle arm. Finally the wheel broke free after some rocking and made a really bad grinding noise. I thought the brakes had frozen, but when my shop took off the rotor the pieces of bearing fell to the floor. The dealership replaced both front bearings, both front rotors and the driver side spindle arm.)
-Tires after 35,000 miles. They were the Firestone ATX. I had the dealership put on a new set when I bought the truck
-Windshield, I caught a stone and some water got into the chipped area, froze and made it crack. I could have gone with out changing it, but I am **** about things like that.
-Presently I have the check engine light coming on after about two minutes of driving. I bought a code scanner and it says the EGR valve may be bad. I am going to take it off and clean it, reset the computer and see if that fixes the problem.

I drive the vehicle hard, generally driving 75-80 in the interstates, and like Andretti around town. I pulled a 3500 pund trailer through the Appalachians at about 70-75 mph. It ran flawlessly. The engine is still original. Trans is original. I have found the Explorer to be a VERY reliable vehicle. I have never had any major trouble, except for the seized bearing.

I will probably need to replace the serpentine belt and battery this winter, but not sure yet.

If you have any questions email me.

Dave
