High milage explorers?

Honda has never and will naver make a truck as stong and tough as an Explorer, so there is no comparison.

Until a Honda can tow 6,700 pound trailer, then there is no comparison.

I'm going to hit 101,000 miles tomorrow in my '99 sport.

No really major parts replaced, in fact I'm still on the original brake pads (yes I do check them at every oil change). I've got a replacement set in the trunk (had them since 50,000) but since 99% of my driving is on the interstate I don't use the brakes very often. I think I may change the pads at the next oil change just because it's a little creepy to have brake pads with that many miles on them :)

Only things replaced are .... Tires, thermostat and wiper blades. The battery is starting to show it's age though, it's starting to sound a little sluggish when starting in cold (Florida cold ;) ) weather.

Explorer Gone with the Wind

Sold '93 XLT to an acquaintance who wasn't put off by its "Less than 'Soccer Mommy'" exterior condition.

He thought he was getting a Bargain!

The old Explorer ran like a top, but bringing it from flat, featureless Florida (no hills, no mountains) to Nevada (Las Vegas is a mountain town!), the 3.08 differential just didn't cut the mustard. Also, the lack of efficiency in the R-134A A/C conversion made for 85 degrees inside when it was 105 in Las Vegas.

Now the old rascal lives in Prescott, never tows anything, and still runs without leaking anything.

Replaced it with a new DOdge Ram 1500, standard cab, short box. This costs me about 2 MPG on the highway and 3 MPG in Las Vegas city driving. I miss the electric windows and door locks, but that's all.

Does, however, yield up a lot more cabin space in the front. Harder to park. Runs like a scalded dog!

And, qualifies for Section 179 tax write-off...

Yeah, it's got a Hemi...

I have a '92 XLT 4.0 w/ tow package. 130000 Miles.
I had to replace the fuel pump, sending unit for the fuel, brakes, calapers, rotors, rear brakes, radius arm bushings, fuel pressure regulator, brake booster (from FPR going out), O2, front shocks, auto hubs on 4x4. That wasn't too bad except I had to do it all in a TWO MONTH PERIOD!!!! Oh yeah, and the normal tune up stuff.

136,000 and Going Strong

This truck gives every indication of living forever. I have not replaced anything other than normal tune up items. I had to replace the serpintine belt and belt tensioniare but aside tires this baby is good to go. The reliability of this truck is phenominal. I do however worry that it might just one day die but I drive it every day and twice a year take it on 5-6 hour trips to West Texas. I love this truck.

Well I was about to buy a mint EB (1996), but after reading this thread I wont do that. Too bad because I loved all the creature comforts and looks. But I dont want to rebuild the thing while I own it! I cant believe the list of things that goes wrong with these vehicles. Thank God for this web site!!! Might have saved me a bundle.....:(

Anyone have any problem with Fuel sending units dieing??? This is a horrid problem for us, but i never hear about it anywere else.

I'm not sure what vehicle you think you are going to get that when hundreds of owners get together in one place who have owned the model between 1 week to 12 years to not see a list of problems like this. Especially amongst 4 wheel drive vehicles, which have more complex trivetrains and maintenance requirements.

If there was a web site like this for every car and truck out there I don't think you'd see a big difference in the number of problems from one site to another. My 2cent.

If I could go back in time I would buy my '93 XLT all over again. It is the BEST Vehicle I have owned. I have had some problems along the way, but nothing serious (I perform 99% of all work on it). I like the reliability, utility, size, and general good feeling I have whenever I drive it. Like any vehicle, an X is going to require Maintenace. A well maintained X should last as long as any other similiar SUV.

Ditto! Who ever buys a used vehicle will be confronted with the normal problems of aging, so if someone found a cherry 96 EB Explorer and the price was right he should have jumped on it. I have not read anything on this site that I have not read on other vehicle sites. Go to the Lexus or Infiniti sites and see for yourself. The same belly gripes are there as well.

You will rarely find comments on newer vehicles because people have warranties to act on but older vehicles will always be problematic. Wait until you turn 50, you will start to slow down and take medications.

uh, you haven't got a clue have you!! Take a blazer or most other 4x4 from 12 years ago and see the problems they have, and how much more rust they have. I've seen buddies explorers which have added 20 hp to their engine and their engines still are lasting 130,000 plus miles. I hope this guy comes back to this site to read these posts, cause he will be missing out on a good vehicle if he thinks explorers are not relaiable.
