I have a left over 2011 4Wd, I usually drive with the light switch turned all the way to the right- opting for my version of day time running lights.

anyway regardless of the temp or length of drive when I come to a stop, turn off the engine and remove the key, lock er up, I hear a definitive high pitch sound coming from under the hood & front grill area. read: not the head lights that I can tell. it's not loud, it doesn't sound mechanical, it's definitely noticeable and seems to go away after a few minutes. I noticed it since day one, called the deal and they say said they'll look at it when I bring it in.

it obviously is related to cooling down, Has anyone experienced this?

I had a leak in my air conditoning on my old Suburban that would do that. Real high pitch whine for a few seconds at shutdown as the pressure equalized.

I've heard that too in my 2012... Haven't really looked to see what it is...

mine does it also

Sometimes i get a hum or noise from under the hood. It only last a few seconds and then stops. Not sure what it is. It it breaks i have a warrenty.

I've started hearing a sort of whine at times now... And in another post I mentioned an issue with my ac/radiator fan... I would probably suspect the fan and that it could be early sign of failing. I'm gonna have to take mine in tomorrow to get it looks at and will update.

I'm guessing you don't have the 'Autolamp' feature. All the way over to the right on mine is Autolamp.

BTW, no noises of any kind when I shut the engine down. I do however get what sounds like an electronic beep a short time after shutting down. Not sure if that is the security system activating or not. Vehicle doesn't have to be locked to get this 'beep'. The manual says the Securilock Passive Anti-Theft system kicks in as soon as the engine is turned off. This beep, however, doesn't sound until approximately 10 -15 seconds later.

The GM Lambdas (Outlook, Acadia, Enclave) also had the same sound after shutting off. I believe someone traced it to the transmission solenoids remaining active and then shutting off a certain amount of time. My '07 Outlook had this sound-no issues to speak of.

Hey guys,

Maybe the noise is your Explorer wanting to be driven more? ;)

Seriously though, if the noise doesn’t sound normal, I suggest letting your dealer check on it. I’m available to help by sending the details to the Customer Service Manager in your area. If you haven’t already, please send a PM with your VIN, contact info, mileage, and dealer name/state.

Thanks Cory..

I honestly don't think it's anything to worry about..

I just fiqured with all the electronics and stuff in these new vehicles, you're gonna hear some different noises...

I had this same noise in mine back in the summer and it was the coolant fan going out!!! I would take it in and get it checked out. according to my service guy it had happened on several new explorers!!

PM sent with details, I'll likely be bringing it in about 1 month for service oil change etc.

uh... no. it's not normal.

my guess that sound is... the fan winding down after turning ignition off and a sign it's failing.

I just came back from the dealer... they replaced the radiator fan.

took the car home and opened the hood to check... yep the fans are spinning real nice and blowing a LOT of air into the engine bay where it wasnt before.

and when i turned the ignition off, i went to look at the fans... they take about 10+ seconds to spin down... and they do it without any noise and no other sound from the engine bay.

be lucky its not summer and the fans go completely out and overheat your engine... take it in.

Thanks Cory..

I've heard that in mine too. I've searched all around but nothing because it last a few minutes. It's kind a high frequency pitch.

correct, my pitch is the head lights. I just ran around with the lights off no pitch sound. lights on earlier and Hi pitch was back.

papel_ace,

I’m happy to lend a hand with the noise you’re hearing by forwarding the info to the Customer Service Manager in your region. For me to do that, please send a PM with your contact information, approximate mileage, dealer name/state, and VIN.

I've got the high pitch thing going when the car is running. I just took it in to the shop today after only 400 miles :( hopefully they will have an answer for me.

I noticed this sound also for the first time tonight. 5,200 miles. Bought the X in early Nov. 2012 limited. The wife has said she's noticed it several times but she never it brought it to my attention. Has anyone figured this out yet? I'm curious now...It doesn't sound normal...no car I've ever had has done this and no one else's car I've been aroound has made this sound shutting down...

If it's a squeal, definitely a fan problem. Get it checked ASAP.

I think you guys are confusing things here. I get the high pitch sound in my explorer when I park it in the garage. Try this:

1. Park the truck, push engine off, take foot off brake. Listen, should be nothing.
2. Now just put your foot on the brake. Listen, you will hear the sound.

I think it is a booster pump or something getting ready for you to start the truck. If you take your foot off the brake and let it sit for about 5 minutes, it will stop because it times out on you starting the car.

Not saying others haven't had an issue here, but it sounds normal to me.
