high pitch sound after shut down

I think you guys are confusing things here. I get the high pitch sound in my explorer when I park it in the garage. Try this:

1. Park the truck, push engine off, take foot off brake. Listen, should be nothing.
2. Now just put your foot on the brake. Listen, you will hear the sound.

I think it is a booster pump or something getting ready for you to start the truck. If you take your foot off the brake and let it sit for about 5 minutes, it will stop because it times out on you starting the car.

Not saying others haven't had an issue here, but it sounds normal to me.
I have never heard any high pitched or any other type of sound after shutting down my Explorer. I just went out to the garage, started it up , let it run a minute or so and shut it down. Put my foot on the brake and nothing. Absolute quiet. Just the way it has been for the 11 months I've had it and I always park in the garage when at home.
The Explorer does have a Fast Restart feature that will allow you to start it without the IA key being around. Within 20 seconds of turning it off without the IA key around, you can restart by putting your foot on the brake and pressing the Start button.
I hardly think this is what is causing the problem because you would have your IA key with you.
I would think that a vehicle making a high pitched sound upon being turned off, has a problem somewhere. It is not normal, IMO.

I get exactly the same thing. Garage.

It's an electronic sound. not mechanical. As if a 'tuning fork' was hit. I thought somewhere, in some other forum, there was a consensus that it was the headlights shutting down. Thoughts? I'll have to listen for it under different conditions. With headlights up to temp as well as for when lights are completely off. Lasts about 4 seconds

As per my post above, I have never had this sound. I park inthe garage and always wait for the headlamps to go off before going in the house. No sound at all when the lights go off.

I have the sound in mine too. It is a transformer or solenoid that is still energized after shutting off the vehicle, probably some sort of delayed-shut-off accessory device. Just as with all electronic components like this, there is variation between them and some will hum and some won't, especially cheaper ones (of which I am sure Ford used). That's why some of us are hearing it and some of us aren't.

I would not worry about it.

I've had the same sound and suspect the same cause. I even heard it once when I turned on accessory mode w/out starting the engine - that would probably rule out the cooling fan or other mechanical components. I think its some of the electronics humming down.

I have heard the sound several times, most recently last night after turning the vehicle off, it was a kinda high pitch electronic type sound. It sounded like it was coming from just under the hood on the drivers side. Somewhere around where the battery sits. I have aftermarket HID's, but I do not think it is lighting related. Ever blow up a balloon, then pull the opening tight and let air out? You get a high pitch kinda noise....sounds kinda like that.

there are other threads about it. One member even stated this he went to a dealership and all the Edge's did it too.

I've noticed it in mine once and it sounds like either an electronic device or a very high speed motor. Definitely not the fans.

Of course in your Explorer, it could have been a squeaking mouse. The test is whether it stopped after you heard a loud SNAP! :)

True...it did occur before I got the critters.:D

Turns out they liked the taste of more than just my Explorer. Our Focus had the battery cover chewed on too. Blasted rodents!!

I have traps in both vehicles now. Haven't gotten anymore since the initial two. Hopefully that's all.

High pitch sounds - there's 2 of them

The sound you hear when pressing on the brake (with IA key within range of car) is most likely the fuel pump.

The sound you hear after the car is off.. not sure. Most likely related to the Autolamp delay feature requiring high energy to keep the lamps running for the allotted time.

I'll keep investigating during my Dealer visit soon :)

I don't hear any sounds prior to hitting the push button start nor do I hear any after shutting it off, most of which is done in my garage. The HID lights, when on, do not produce any sounds at all while waiting for the delay to turn them off.
The only sound I ever hear is a short electronic beep after locking the doors and walking away from the vehicle. I'm not sure if that is related to the vehicle's security system or not.

So that we are all on the same page, run the car around for 10-20 minutes, put the car in park, shut her off, walk around the front of the car. It's distinct, it's very apparent. It won't wake the neighbors, dogs and humans can hear it, it's not the fans or anything mechanical. It's a high pitched electric sound, it's a steady sound. It goes away in about 5 minutes, I'm sure it has something to do with cooling down of the car or head lights, the simple fact that some have it and some don't raises some concern.

My fear by some that say don't worry about it is exactly that, the car goes out of warrantee and suddenly you have a $400 chip that has to be replaced because it burned out prematurely...maybe, maybe not

spitfisher, when I get home I pull in nose first and use the entrance from the back of the garage to enter the house. As such, I always am at the front of the Ex after parking it. If it is at night and the HID's are on, I will wait at the front until the delay shuts them off. No noises of any kind.

PK, it's loud enough where you can hear it with no effort. It sounds ( no pun intended) that you don't have it. I have had strangers tell me that I must have left something on when I pull in to the local grocery store.

I kinda wish ford would grab a hold of this minor issue, it's become very clear the dealer doesn't have clue. if the EX isn't running they can fix it, but a small noise not effecting anything they're besides themselves. "ahhh we're not sure".

I have heard this sound as well. Peter, no insult intended. Some people can't hear high frequency sounds. This is a very high pitch noise. Mine does it all the time. It's some device in the car and is normal, unlike the A pillar rattle. This has been posted and discussed at length numerous times.

Heard it again last night. Only difference was I had the car Accessory mode..... That ladies voice on Sync said, "Incoming" !!!!!!

No problem chimoman. I know my hearing could be a little better but at 65 I'm not complaining. Next time I turn it off I'll bring my 5 yr. old dog over and see if he reacts. :D
One of the service advisors at the dealership is a young fellow so next time I take it in I'll have him listen and see if he hears anything. In the mean time, it's not something I'm going to worry about. Good luck at your end.

Peter
