high pitch sound after shut down

No problem chimoman. I know my hearing could be a little better but at 65 I'm not complaining. Next time I turn it off I'll bring my 5 yr. old dog over and see if he reacts. :D
One of the service advisors at the dealership is a young fellow so next time I take it in I'll have him listen and see if he hears anything. In the mean time, it's not something I'm going to worry about. Good luck at your end.

Peter

It's definitely there most times. There have been times when I'm not able to hear it. Like I said - someone else reported that Edge's have the same noise.

I just heard it for the 1st time. 11 months/10k miles. I have good hearing and definitely would have noticed this before. Really strange.

High Freqency noise after shut down

I have the noise after shut down... very high frequency somtimes stops, but last time it didn't and the battery was too low to work on next day. Had to jump the vehicle and it is at the dealer now... hope they can find the problem and it isn't intermittant... :(

Hey wlairsey, did they ever find your problem? I've got the same high pitched sound, and the dealer says that they do not know what's causing it.

Sometimes i get a hum or noise from under the hood. It only last a few seconds and then stops. Not sure what it is. It it breaks i have a warrenty.

i have noticed this with my '91, the previous owner said he thought it was a fuel relay or something that whined quietly after the truck shuts off and it doesnt seem to do any harm. pretty much any vehicle will have noises from engine and parts cooling down after being run.

Hi Guys,

I am more inclined is the fuel pump.

Question, does it happens when you startup the engine?

Bobby

No, only when the vehicle is in on mode (engine off, not accessory mode). It's coming the front, left side of the vehicle (from the vehicle's perspective) and the bottom of the engine bay.

It doesn't go away though, I can leave the vehicle with the key on (and engine off) for a long time and the sound will persist.

yea if you are talkign about the left side while looking at the front of thr truck from outside, then that is the same place mine makes noise from, its barely audible and it goes away after a while, i asumed it was the sound of some part of the fuel system either running or cooling down.

I had the noise on both my 2011 Edge and 2011 Explorer from day 1. It's some sort of high pitched electronics related noise. You can trigger it without even having to start the car. It is definitely annoying but only last around 5 mins.

Not sure if we are talking about the same noise but I have a high pitched whistling noise from under the hood that I hear when I park in the garage after shutting off the ignition. I probably only hear it in the garage since it is insulated from most of the outside noises. I have noticed that I only hear this noise if I touch the brake pedal after I shut off the ignition. If I exit the car without touching the brake pedal I do not hear the whistling noise. Seems to last about 5 minutes after shutting down car and exiting. My Ex has done this since new. Has anyone else noticed this noise?

Hi gang,

If your vehicle is making a noise that is concerning you, the best first step is having your dealership inspect. They'll be in the best position to determine whether or not a noise is normal.

Crystal, Mayher makes a good point. The noise really is only noticeable when the vehicle is parked in the garage. Otherwise the outside noises tend to mask the sound. I seriously doubt the Ford shop could hear the noise because their shop garage is too noisy. I personally don't think it's anything more then some electronics related noise. I'm not worried about it being a defective part since so many other owners hear the same noise. Like I said, I hear it on both my 2011 Edge and Explorer. I guess we are all just wondering what it is.

I had it on my 11. It's a very very high pitch noise. It's not the fuel pump. I drove my Ltd for 2 years. Did it from day 1. Nothing to worry about. It's the switched mode power supply within the ECU/M, nothing to worry about. If you stand there long enough you will hear a faint click and then the noise will stop.

Hi jamers99,

You can always go on a ride along with your tech to a quieter location and demonstrate the noise. That may assist them in diagnosing/explaining what the sound is.

Experiencing this same problem as well as many others!!

I am so glad I discovered this forum. I was beginning to think my car was the biggest lemon but it seems like many of the 2011 Explorer XLT's are having the same problems. What's infuriating is that Ford knows about the problems but the owner needs to present the problems and quite often the solutions.

From the beginning I have had minor problems with the truck. I love most aspects of it but these minor issues have really made me want to get rid of it and go back to Honda.

We were heading away for Christmas vacation on Friday and were stuck in some traffic when my car started to overheat. Managed to get it to our dealership. When I did a google search of my problem I came to this website, I am so grateful. I see now that there is an issue with the coolant fan which I will point out when I talk to the service department Monday.

An ongoing problem though is this high pitched sound mentioned here. It is a very intermittent problem that of course cannot be reproduced at the dealership. In addition to the sound, the gear selector indicator stays illuminated. Most often it will not go away on it's own. At first I would have to drive the car to get it to shut off but now we discovered you can turn the key and shift to drive then back to park and it will shut the noise and lighted gear indicator off. Has anyone else noticed this problem? I am concerned if I don't notice it then it is wearing down the battery. As others have said it is most noticeable when parked in the garage.

Any suggestions or feedback are appreciated. Thanks again for all the info on this site. It's extremely helpful.

Welcome to the Forum MOONMA.:wavey:
There is a thread on TSB`s in the 'Sticky' section on the first page. The one that likely applies to your issue is;
11-7-21 COOLING FAN NOISE, LACK OF A/C AND/OR OVERHEAT CONDITION

I believe the TSB is only performed free of charge while the vehicle is still under the factory warranty or if you bought the Ford ESP (extended warranty).

There was also a customer satisfaction program 12B36 which called for the reprogramming of the cooling fan control module. This would cause the fan to intermittantly run at a high speed to prevent contamination building up on the motor contacts. This program ended May 1, 2013.

Ford sent out letters re the above to all owners of affected vehicles.

If you require any assistance in getting this problem looked after, you can send a PM (private message) to Crystal or Ashley (FordService) the Ford reps on here.

You can use this link to contact them;

Include your name, daytime phone number, VIN, mileage, and dealership info in your message.

Good luck.

Peter

Did this fix your problem... Having same issue... It can be turned on on off by inserting key

Also will continue to ring intermittently with key removed ... If you let it ring it will run down the battery ... Dealer seems clueless

I have the same high pitched noise on my 2011 XLT. Pretty sure it was there from day 1. Parked it tonight around 5pm and went back into the garage around 8pm and it was still ringing. Did a google search, found this thread and as I figured, others mentioned it will drain the battery. Went out, started it and it barely started, battery was definitely low. Let it run for 15 mins, let the alternator charge the battery back up a little and shut it down. I specifically turned off the AC (been hot here lately) and didn't touch the brake pedal. No whine this time. I'm still paranoid and don't want to spend 5 minutes with it after turning it off every time. Taking it in.
