Hello

I live in MA, and yesterday my X started to make a high pitch noise when I was accelerating. The noise was coming from under to hood, and seemed to get louder the quicker I accelerated. So far, I have only had this noise when the weather is cold (10 degrees). Anybody know what might cause a high pitch whine when the weather is cold? This noise is not a belt (but I will replace just to be safe).

Thanks!

Hmm... mine has the whine too! It doesn't seem to do it at highway speeds, seems to do it whilst accelerating through second gear... feels that way at least. The whine gets stronger as the revs get higher, but then disappears whenever I let off the accelerator or it changes gear.

I've just left it be, I've almost become accustomed to it! Sounds like I have a wee supercharger under the bonnet!!!

It definitely is coming from the front though... no idea what it is though! Truck runs fine, whatever it is isn't causing any codes to be thrown.

My 03 with 90,000 miles does that when it's really cold around 2,100 rpm's as it is warming up while excelerating --then goes away. I figured it was a worn out fan clutch. Could it be coming from the transmission?

My 02 Ex V6 has recently started doing that. It goes away when the engine warms up though.

Ditto. Comments in this forum lead me to believe it was my rear differential but like yall said, it sounds as if it is coming from the engine. Started when the real cold weather set in. Curious if it goes away in a few months. Gas mileage is down some but truck runs the same.

Our 4.6 did this in cold weather before the transmission put up the white flag. It was an '02 as well.

I wanted to bump this since my 03 explorer has recently developed the same problem (70,000 miles)...Anyone else with input on this?

Never noticed it till it has been real cold here.

I had the rear diff issue fixed under warranty, so I don't think its that sound.

Definitely occurs only when accelerator is being pushed around 40-50 mph. Comes and goes and does not occur everytime like the rear diff issue.

It seems electrical, but thats just my opinion.

I'm having the same problem with my 03. It also started with the cold weather. This is the first winter I've had it. Does it go away when the weather warms back up? Has anyone figured out what it is or if I/we need to worry about it?

My '03 is doing the same thing. I bought it this past Nov and it just started doing it when the weather turned cold. For me it seems to happen around 1900 rpm when running around 60 mph.

Has anyone figured out what it is and if I need to worry about it? Does it go away when the weather warms back up?

i just bought my 03 in decenber and the first time it got really cold i noticed it

Mine will do it a many speeds between 30 and 70 mph but goes away when I left up or accelerate so a change in RPMs is one clue. Tranny or belt/tensioner/bearing related mechanisms may be at fault. I wonder if I can duplicate sound at idle. Might try this weekend. I don't think it's a major issue though....

Sounds like exactly the same series of events on mine. I will also try the "idle" test this weekend.

Anyone in a warm weather climate experience this or does it strictly relate to cold temperature locales?

One more thing...I have not been able to consistently duplicate the sound at a specific speed or RPM (unlike the rear diff issue which always occurred at 50 MPH every time), can anyone else?

Noticed this high-pitched whine/whistle at a few different times (only appeared with cold weather less than 20-25 degrees F):

1. Rarely during idle after startup. Comes and goes. Lasts no more than 2-3 seconds.

2. When first driving cold truck at low speed and rpm's around 1800-2000. Again, comes and goes. Will disappear if I let up on the accelerator. Will go away on own if I don't. Can't remember which gear (2nd or 3rd).

3. Begun to notice it while driving on the highway between 60-70mph. Much less noticeable in volume, but definitely there.

Trans shifts smoothly... no problems. No check engine light. Again, only noticed once got colder than about 25 degrees. Noticed noises in 1-3 order above. First after startup, then right when starting to drive and truck still cold, and most recently on highway.

Might be the iac. I know the one in my 94 does this intermittantly in real cold weather. Just a thought???

I have occasionally heard a high pitched whine for 6-8 months now in my '02 XLT V-8. It was definately not cold here in Tucson when this started, nor is it cold now. Some mornings it's in the 30s-40s here and it might be a bit louder then, not sure about that though. Like Buttsy said it stops when I accelerate or deaccelerate. Mine seems to do this in the 30-50 mph range. I don't notice it at all on the freeways. I have never heard the whine at idle. Another clue is it seems to happen in V-6 and V-8 equiped trucks.

"02 ranger whines at speed

I have an 02 Ranger 4X4 with 140,000 miles.

My high pitched whine only occurs at high speeds 60+ and is more common at colder temps (I'm in MN, so that means at or below 0).

If I let up on the gas it will quickly cease.

Does not occur when I accelerate, only when I am cruising or slightly depressing the accelerator going uphill.

I can't really tell where it is coming from, I'm assuming it is coming from the engine.

I replaced my serpentine belt and the whine is gone.

Whine

Our 4.6 did this in cold weather before the transmission put up the white flag. It was an '02 as well.

Has anyone found their whine yet? My 04 is doing this, it started before the trans died. I put a new trans in this summer and it was fine until the cold weather. Mine is definitely only under light load, seems to be mostly either 2nd or 5th gear. The noise stops immediately if increase or decrease throttle input.

I've been over the engine and can't find any vacuum leaks. I think it sounds like a hydraulic noise.

Are there any ford techs on here with experience? I can't reproduce the noise in my shop it will only do this while the car is moving.

Any help would be appreciated.

Same issue, but it almost sounds like it's coming the back of the cluster... But since their digital I don't think it would be....
