Hey guys,

I'm looking to install a DVD player in the X, but didn't want to spend the money on a 12v player (US$500 here in Australia).

I am going to get a stand alone home DVD player (more flexible - multiregion, multi system, mp3, cd-r(w), vcd etc).

Anyway, I understand that most of the price difference comes from the tray stabilizers and shock absorbtion. Will a home DVD unit be able to cope with the rough ride? It's not like it's going to be used while I'm on the trail, just on road trips and stuff.

Also, when using an ACDC converter, would it produce any noise?

TIA,
BK

home DVD players cant handle many bumps. the first dvd player i bought a few years ago, i had to take back. it wouldnt read the disc because the stockers at best buy were a little rough and some internal parts got jarred around.

but that's not your biggest problem...
moisture, dust, and tempetature extremes that occur in a car can ruin a home dvd player very easily.

I wouldn't recommend it. I know that Sony DVD and CD players for the home ship with a plastic key that locks the tray so it doesn't get damaged in shipping. And that's in a nice box with packing material. I think you'd kill it pretty quick unless you treated it with kid gloves. Audiovox makes some cheap, rugged car dvd players that would be a whole hellof a lot easier.

Here's where the idea was from

Here's where the idea was from. I was gonna gut the home player and install it (differently - we have shorter consoles in Australia) in the centre console.

Is there ANY way to get this to be stable? I was gonna insulate the console too...I know this sounds like an awful lot of work, but how cool would it be to have a tray slide out of the rear of the console?!?!

Also, if it does screw up, apart from the work and the big gaping hole in the console, it's not a whole lot of cash down the drain...

Thanks for the replies,
BK

dvd

well a good alternative to this is just getting yourself a Sony Playstation 2. It has the DVD playing capabilities no matter how rough the ride is.. i know so b/c we went offroading in a 89 explorer w/ a ps2 in it.. no complaints there. the only problem with this setup would be on where you want to plant the ps2. well good luck on your work
