Horrible mileage (around 10mpg)

checked every time.. most of th etime within a few hundred miles.. its 2k overdue right now :( it has 60k miles on it, it stays on the road, but I keep it clean, I get a diamond gloss treatment every year thast like a year long wax job, its detailed often, I use chrome polish almost every time I wash it, its garaged every night, never seen snow either.

and in these 60k miles its had... a new tranny, a new exhaust manifold, new spark plug wires, 2 a/c compressor clutches replaced, 6 seat tracks (driver side) 3 door lock solenoids (rear driver side door) a battery, a PCM reflash, and the usual maintanence work from ford. The rest I've done myself.

yes I've added things, grille guard, talilight guards, dual exhaust, kkm filter, a system, heavier rims than stock, but this thing has a v8 in it, it should be able to handle that and more.

Did you buy it used? How did you blow a tranny in 60K?! Also what size is the dual exhaust? Sometimes if you get pipes that are too big it will actually lower your gas milage i've heard...

bought it brand new, it had 17 miles on it when we bought it off the lot.

flow50 dual in/out muffler with 2.25" pipes

I dunno, my tranny was shifting funny, so I took it in.. and they replaced it. the new one does exactly wht the old one was.. I put my foot on the gas it jumps, as if it sihfted.. I left off the gas it jumps again. it makes for a really rough ride in stop/go traffic

Fox, with a v8 you should be haulin @$$. I test drove those things, they hardly take 3k rpms for them to cruise. at 4k rpms+ v8's FLY

not mine :P what year did you test? you know the 98 or so SOHC v6 only has 10 less HP.. and a lot less weight

that is correct :D

I went out and tired accelerating at 4,000 RPM tonight onmy way to the movie...I must say thats why you get such crappy milage. at 4,000 rpm I was nearly at WOT. I had to keep my foot in it to keep it from shifting. Mine likes to shift at or before 3,000 rpm. at 3,000 RPM I was accelerating a lot faster then any other cars.

man you must live in a slow town or something. either that or the people here are all leadfoots. this afternoon I was drivin like I always do and had people.. even old ladies flyin ahead of me. I simply can't pullout form a stop with oncoming cars and not accel to 4k rpm, I'd be rearended before I got to 2nd gear, maybe I take too many chances.

I did an experiment tonight myself. Whenever I started to climb a hill.. I turned o/d off. I must say it made climbing the hill much nicer, it used to downshift like 4 times trying to keep a constant speed climbing things things.. maybe my overdrive is just screwed

Well of course as others have said, the lift and bigger tires will hurt milage some. But in my opinion, the best thing for you to do would be to take your truck to your local Ford Dealer and see what you think. I mean I know some dealerships can seem a little questionable and you may not want them working on your truck, whereas others can be very nice.

If the people seem nice and the place looks respectable, let them check it out. That way your guaranteed to at least know for sure what your truck needs, from there you can decide what you want or don't want to buy.

But if you just start replacing parts at random, you may end up spending a lot more than if you just had it checked out by a good technician.

Is that an automatic you had rebuilt? If so it might be in your tranny. Did they replace all bands,or just some. Some places do not replace all unless you ask them. What about the converter?Mine has a170,000 miles on it and it shifts sluggish. If your converter isn't locking up right it's like running a stall converter, almost similar to a band slipping, causing your r.p.m's to raise.

wow thats technical heh, but yes.. I've been experimenting with my overdrive.. turning it on and off at specific times.. I've found that when it gets out of my way.. my driving can be much more pleasent.. my tranny ALWAYS wants to be in overdrive, even when its inappropriate to do so. sometimes it will try to engage overdrive while in between 1st and 2nd gear.. if it can do such a thing. There was a page of things they replaced in the tranny, I have no idea what most of them are, I know how engines work.. I don't know trannies

Thanks for the help, I imagine bad gas mileage is a very common problem, infact I'm sure of it, I just wonder why ford wouldn't have a recall or something on all these transmissions

In reply to jason_omer and DarkFox1:

I would try replacing the FPR and cleaning the MAS as described under Explorer Tips on the home page. I had been getting 240 miles a tankful since I have had this truck. After cleaning the MAS, I now get about 260 miles a tankfull. I just replaced the FPR today, and the truck has never run better. If that does not help, you might try the O2 sensors. See my post at

The info below is from MSN carpoint.

Occasional problems on this vehicle are failures of the Fuel Pressure Regulator, the Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor and the Intake Manifold Gaskets. Failure of the Fuel Pressure Regulator may prevent the vehicle from starting. The cost to repair the Fuel Pressure Regulator is estimated at $75.00 for parts and $65.00 for labor. The cost to clean the MAF Sensor is estimated at $32.50 for labor. The cost to repair the Intake Manifold Gaskets is estimated at $50.00 for parts and $240.00 for labor. All prices are estimates based on $65 per flat rate hour and do not include diagnostic time or any applicable sales tax.

Here is a link to that info:

Hope this helps.

wow, thanks man, I'm gonna take it to the dealership first tho I think, and if they don't bother any of this stuff and/or it is not fixed, I'll try it, thanks for the links, it will be helpful for both of us!

No problem. I hope that helps. This site is the greatest. I have gotten a lot of useful info here. I thought my Explorer was dead or in need of a trans rebuild from the way it was running. I just hope that my cats have not gone bad from driving it with the bad FPR, but after replacing the FPR I am now able to feel the power increase from the other mods that I have gotten, such as the KKM tru rev kit and the BBK 66 mm throtle body.
:bounce:

hrmm, you know, I have a kkm and a flow50 dual Xhaust kit.. I just still have the stock cats. shouldn't I be seeing increases in both fuel econ and performance from this stuff? I am gonna have the ford palce check my ride friday, I'm done w/ class at like 9.. so they'll have all weekend if they need to.

whelp, I've been talking to some people, and reading my haynes manual.. it seems very possible the problem could be the TPS ,I know yall've already said that.. heh, but I guess I'm a hard head. I'll take it down firday and make sure they check that sensor

thanks again!

I have a KKM and a Dynomax cat back system and I have not noticed any increase in fuel economy. I just got a Pro-flow MAS and hope to install it soon. I doubt if it will help improve my gas mileage, though.

Thanks…..

What, MO reply to this one?????

well I guess it would... unless you have a bad sensor.

you know I've been piutting up with these problems for a while now, and since I've all but concluded that its my TPS, the idea of BMW's "drive by wire" that uses sensors to steer the car scares the "bajesus" out of me. I mean sure these sensors fail and we have running problems.. but imagine a brake pedal sensor failing.. or a gas pedal, or steering wheel?

I guess I got alittle on a tanget there, but just.. I'm not too happy bought this computer stuff in my ride lol and its only gonna get worse

Darkfox,

It sounds like your transmission is slipping. Revving your 5.0 to 4k in normal driving would push the truck way quicker than the normal traffic flow.

A slipping transmission would also explain the horrible gas mileage. Check the fluid and/or have the tranny checked.
